How do you keep a lettuce fresh for one week?

I only go into town once a week to do my shopping. I feel like a lettuce... so I buy one. By the time I get home... I am over the feeling and it goes in the fridge... in its plastic bag... but not seal... as if you seal vegetables in plastic bags... they start to roat. When I grab the lettuce 5 or 6 days later... it is not much good for anything. Keep in mind that this is not your common lettuce with all the leaves nice and tight... but rather what we call "mignonette" with loose leaves... brown on the outside and green inside. So... do you have a solution to my dilemma?

A napkin works wonders with lettuce and of course you know you can't cut it b/c it will wilt faster where you touched it with a knife. The napkin even works in the bag salads. We put ours salad in our veggie draw and it stays fresh for a little over a week.

hello there to U...eating vegetables is really a good thing, good for you...i really love eating vegetables like cabbage, carrots, squash, broccoli, beans, cauliflowers, all green leafy vegetables, etc...i love eating lettuce too, in a vegetable salad, chicken lettuce sandwich, or other lettuce dressings...yeah, a lot of people would buy or do their shopping once a week...some would buy for their whole month...in keeping lettuce fresh for a week, first you have to wash them first, separate all the leaves of lettuce, then place them in a bowl of water ...after that, drain the water, then rinse each piece of lettuce in a faucet as you remove it from the bowl, be sure you have to check each piece because at times there are some bugs, insects, or dirt...buying a fresh one is good...after checking, you can place them in a salad spinner, let them spin until they become dry... Then after that, you can store them, seal or wrap them in a paper bags, or perforated plastic bags...then put them in the fridge to keep them fresh for weeks...i've learned that from my mom, and i always follow those procedures and it works... Some vegetables lose moisture quickly and should be stored in containers, plastic or paper bags...some say that it's not good to wash vegetables before refrigerating, because accordingly, too much moisture can cause damage and can cause lettuce to turn brown...but i would still prefer washing vegetables first before storing them in the fridge...and it's all up to you, what way you want to follow in keeping vegetables fresh for weeks... You can try all tips and see what's best for it...eating lots of vegetables is really beneficial to the body...it makes you healthy, just make sure to buy the fresh ones, because there are vegetables that are infected of insect poison...keep eating and appreciating vegetables...have a beautiful, blessed day ahead of U...may GOD BLESS U & UR family always!!!

The only thing that I find that works for me every time is to put it in a ziploc storage bag, try to get out as much air as I can and then put it in the vegetable crisper in our fridge. That's never failed me, although you may need to pull of an outside leaf or two.~D

I've heard that if you line your crisper with paper towel it keeps vegies fresher for longer.

Sounds like you shop like me. We get fresh veggies, on the Island that I live on every Thursday. I take my lettuce out of the plastic bag, and wrap with damp paper towels, just to keep the humidity level up, & spray every 2nd day or so. I find the plastic works like a mini-greenhouse & rots the lettuce. Nice to see you posting, again,

i use the trusty old tupperware lettuce crisper or vegetable storer, they are probably the only bits of tupperware i use.i think if i am not wrong you live in the bush,so when you go to town see if you can pick up some tuppereware.i usually buy my tupperware from a second hand shop,a lot cheaper.cheers sue

Don't keep it in its plastic bag for one. You should Try cleaning your lettuce before storing it. Try keeping in no plastic bag. If the lettuce just is wilted, then soak it in iced water for about 5 minutes. You may want to change the store you buy your produce at. I can keep lettuce in my fridge for up to 2 weeks before it goes bad.

I have the same problem. They have something now called "green bags" that is suppose to keep produce fresh longer. I haven't tried it yet but I think I may give it a try.

I think the best way to preserve this kind of vegetable is not to put it in plastic bag but to store it in the freezing part of the fridge. i remember my mom used to put hers in a deep freezer and can take more than a week and still look fresh. one other way she use to do is to chop them into smaller parts and keep them in a container and left in the fridge. you can try this way to see how it works.

What I have done lately is take the core out, wash it and spin it dry in my handy dandy Pampered Chef salad spinner. Then I put in a zip locked sealed bag with one paper towel folded in half. I have heard that if you tear by hand, or cut with a nylon knife it will prolong the life of the lettuce as well.

I've had good luck using Ever Fresh bags. They usually extend the freshness a few days. Another idea, but I don't know if it works with all types of lettuce, is to store it in water. A restaurant I used to work at kept iceberg lettuce in pails of water inside the fridge. The lettuce always came out nice and crisp.
