Yes I am such a softy when it comes to animals and this poem really touched me. I think this would be lovely to print out and put in a card for someone who's just lost their beloved pet. What do you think? Has anyone else got any other poems like this to share?
IF IT SHOULD BE
If it be I grow frail and weak
And pain should wake me from my sleep
Then you must do what must be done
For this last battle can't be won.
You will be said - I understand
Don't let your grief stay in your hand
For this day, more than all the rest
Your love and frienship stands the test.
We've had so many happy years
What is to come will hold no fears
You'd not want me to suffer - so
When the time comes - please let me go.
Take me where all my needs they'll tend
But stay with me until the end
And hold me firm, and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you too will see
It is kindness you do me
Although my tail its last has waved
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Do not grieve that it should be you
Who must decide this thing to do
We've been so close - we two - these years
Don't let your heart hold any tears....

This is a real tear jerker for sure..I have a little dog that i love so much...She is only a year old,but she was only 7 days old when i got her,she has added so much joy to my life..I love this little dog so much ,i often think what in the world would i do if something was to happen to her???Reading this brought those thoughts to my mind..Sometimes i wish i had not got to loving her so much because i know when or if i ever lose her it is going to be so very sad....I have been attached to dogs before but this little dog ,is different,i just fell in love with her...My children have grown up and she is our baby,you would think she is a real child because she is so spoiled haha.....My kids tell me i have her rotten, but she is what keeps me going...

Oh my gosh coffeeshot, this poem is a real tear jerker, and I was no exception; I had tears running down my face as I read it, and ended up sobbing! The words are just beautiful.
I have had to make the heart-wrenching decision a few times in the past to put a pet to sleep, and the words in this poem are perfect.
I have two dogs, one of which is getting quite old, so the poem hit me hard as you can imagine. But it is also beautiful, and thanks for sharing it with us. I have printed it off to keep.

I had to put my cat to sleep a couple of years ago and it was the hardest thing I have ever done. She had been my companion and friend for 17 beautiful years. This poem is beautiful and I wish I had had it to read when I had to put my cat to sleep. As I read this tears flowed from my eyes. Thank you for posting this. Even though I had to put my cat asleep two years ago this poem still means a lot to me.
