do you understand your kid's assignment

My cousin was complaining to me one time about his kid's assignment in school. She was so frustrated because she can't help her kid do his assignment. So I ask her what are the reasons. She gave me several reasons. 1. The lesson is different from what she had learned from school. 2. There are too many books to read. 3. There are too many projects ask by the teacher and she can't find those things around the house. 4. She doesn't know where to get the assignment. 5. Her kids said... that is not how teacher do it. Whew... good thing I still don't have a kid.

My daughter is not yet in school but next school year, I'm planning to enroll her. It's my sister who complains about her daughter's assignments. Good thing she has an "intelligent sister" (that's me! wink). She lets me answer the assignments.

Good for you. I guess you will not have a problem with your kid's assignment when she goes to school. Good Luck. take care.

My parents went through this with me and I go through it with my so- even in the 2nd grade. His work is not hard, the school just does things differently and has renamed things: adding is plusing, borrowing is something else. That I find the most difficult.

Occasionally my son comes home with school work that does not come with clear directions. I find it difficult to help him with those assignments because I am not sure what he is supposed to do.

That happens to us from time to time. 4 of my 5 kids are in school. Occassionally we will get a teacher that does not give clear directions. Also, if they don't hand out written details of what they want, the kids forget before they even get home from school. And yes, I've often heard "my teacher didn't do it that way!" It is enough to drive a parent nuts. Tell your cousin to hang in there, and suggest that she meet with the teacher and explain her concerns. I did this, and now the teacher sends me a note explaining in detail what is supposed to be done.

I understand. Kids who are just starting to go school develop a certain loyalty to their teachers. And it's hard to make them do what we want them to do when they only listen to the teacher.
