I wasn't for sure what interest group this fit under, so I chose health. It seems that I have always done this, no matter how hard I try not too! Every time I take the first sip of a soda I have one hiccup. Is it just me, or does others do the same thing? What causes this to happen? If soda doesn't make you hiccup, is there another food or drink that causes you to have hiccup(s)?

I definitely get the one hiccup thing. No idea why. It's a loud one though and I always forget that it will happen until it's too late. I am going to try and remember so that I can test it and figure out what the issue is. It must have something to do with the carbonation, since the carbonation is most intense with the initial sip.

Nothing specific to a certain food, just sometimes when I eat too quickly and don't have anything to wash it down. But I do have an annoying tendency to hiccup when I am in large, empty cathedrals...

I rarely ever have the Hip-hups, I can't remember when I have, So everytime you drink soda ypu have hiup-ups? I know when I drink soda I will burp. I think when a person have Hip-cups, they are getting to much air in their mouth, I might be wrong about that, but that is what I think.

Yeah, I don't get the hiccups too often. But just hiccup once with the first drink of a soda! I guess that might be the reason why with too much air!

I usually don't get them in general, it is just one hiccup with the first drink of soda.

I can't say I've ever figured out a certain thing that caused me to get the hiccups - I wish I could because I hate it when I do get them it drives me crazy. My understanding is the main thing is something to do with too much air getting inhaled at a certain time but am not sure.

I just think it is strange, because it is only one hiccup! My mom use to say it was a sign that babies were growing, I believed it too, because you could practically watch my daughter grow.

I don't know why it is....But I can eat at McDonalds or White Castle and get the hiccups from their soft drinks...It doesn't happen at any other restuarant...

It almost always happens when I drink out of a can or bottle directly or if I use a straw. But, if I pour it into a glass, it never happens. No clue why other than there's more sucking going on with a can/bottle/straw then a glass...

Hi treei, I still remember during my childhood I usually would have hiccup after taking aerated drinks or taking drinks and talking too much at the same time. I felt uncomfortable to have this continuously hiccup and followed by a disgusting sound after very hiccup. This would make my mom felt uneasy and she would try to help me by persuading me to quaff a glass of water so as to get rid of the excessive air in my stomach. And this really worked most of the time and I felt happy that I didn't hiccup anymore. It’s weird that I don’t hiccup for quite a long time or might be this is because I always take hot average and take food in a hurry nowadays If my kid or any one of my relatives or friends and etc come across such hiccup problem, I usually would ask them to swig water until they do not hiccup anymore instead of asking to finish the whole glass of water. Take care and posting.

Funny Question Terri,For both me and my Dad the one food that will give us the hiccup's is fresh hamburger...Weird Huh? I think it is because for what ever reason we'll suck in some air or something ,like a gulp with the first bite.Who would even think such a thing could be genetic,Then again maybe it's just a coincidence.

Sipping soda doesn't give me the hiccups but it sometimes makes me belch, especially when it isn't cold enough. It's horrible when you can't seem to stop doing it and especially if it is in front of someone! Makes it kind of difficult to have a conversation too! I actually know someone who likes their soda barely cool. I can't do it! On the subject of hiccups when my neice gets them all I have to do is look at her and smile and she holds her breath to keep me from trying to scare her. It is hilarious!
