The Mothman - what is it? Is it real?

I hadn't even heard of the Mothman until that Richard Gere movie, the Mothman Prophecy. I know it is some creature that appears before a disaster, other than the bridge in Penn, and supposedly seen flying around the twin towers on 9/11, what other disasters has this been sighted? Another question is what are the theories of what it is supposed to be, and what it could be - I have heard things from demon(s) to a 50 foot giant owl. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think it's real or a crock?

I have no clue what the Mothman is. I was looking it up because of the new series Paranormal State show. I too would like to know more about this creature.

I don't really know what it is or what it could be...but with so many people reporting sightings there must be something. I don't think it has really been deterrmined why it appears but some suggest it comes as a signal of tradgedy. Some say it causes tradgedy. I am still looking for bigfoot or some kind of proof of it's existance beside a picture. We may never know the truth about these kind of things in our lifetime. I hope someone finds some answers soon.

The Mothman Prophecy movie twisted the old tales into something beyond it's old Legends. The Point Pleasant bridge (Ohio/West Virginia at Point Pleasant, WV) made huge headlines when it fell, but the Mothman had been reported in that area for dozens of years prior to that, so if it was meant to portend disaster, it took a long time. A flurry of sightings around the bridge collapse and the freak natue of the disaster did lead some to believe the Mothman somehow CAUSED the collapse, not FORETOLD it. How it became associated with 9/11 is beyond me.
