Hello Hatley,
I haven't put my notifications on for any friend, because I frequently visit "discussions my friends started" link. Plus I visit my friend's profiles who do not appear in that area to see if they haven't come or if their discussions are just burried in the pile of my more active friends' discussions. So, I don't miss on my friends, though I may not rather I do not respond to all as I can not because I do not either have knowledge or anything of interest to say. I do read their discussions though and rate them.
I do get mylot emails when I get a response to either my own discussion, which I straightforwardly delete without even opening (just reading the subject), or to a comment I made in someone else's discussion, in which case I access that discussion from email or directly from here, again deleting the email afterwards.

I have been really overwhelmed by having put my notifications on because I have so many emails and lots of it spam. I also do not respond to each and everyone as I run out of time but I do read all of them and rate all of them. I have run into as many as one hundred emails most again are spam. thats what I got for joining some of those surveys no money but lots of unwanted spam.

Not me, Patsie,
You won't believe how many myLot emails I receive and I have already axed most notifications.
I clear my personal mails which are much fewer and more important first. When I have time, I will work at myLot notifications.
Give it some time and I think your enthusiasm might cool. Not trying to dump cold water over you, of course...:P

The workload is indeed impossible.
I would suggest that you turn off notifications for 2 groups of people only. The first is those whose discussions you think you will likely like to read. The second is those whose discussions you will likely like to answer.
For most cases, these 2 groups are the same group. There are exceptions though so I made them 2.
That is what I do; it is really up to you.
You will find yourself adding more and more friends. And when it gets to the hundreds and thousands or even tens of thousands, you can imagine how crazy it would be.

I do the same but from the list as my email notifications does not seem to work when I email back so have to go to the lists anyway.
