How active are you on Facebook?

I only started using Facebook about 2 weeks ago and would like to know how active you guys are? I get all these nice and funny little messages like "You've been smiled at", or flowers, fairies, and lots and lots more. But I can't seem to keep up with everything and then it feels as if I'm neglecting my friends. I only have about 10 friends at this stage and I just don't know how some people can handle hundreds of friends. My kids are on facebook the whole time when they have nothing else to do. I would really like to receive some input on this.

I don't use facebook and neither does anyone I know. Most people I know use myspace instead. My daughter is always on myspace and so are most of her friends. They do a lot of chatting back and forth and she keeps bugging me to sign up, but I say why bother when I don't have any friends on it anyways, at least not that I know of. She says then I could talk to my son and daughter-in-law and her more easily but I can do that through my emails anyways, so I don't want an account on myspace. The main reason is I don't want to have to learn how to use another site. I am happy with just using my email addresses. That's good enough for me.

Thanks for your response. It's actually funny, as I said in the beginning, my children signed me up for Facebook so that we would communicate with each other while they are overseas, and now they don't have access to the internet where they are working. They connect with their mobile phones from time to time, but I think that costs money as they pay for the data that's been downloaded.

I have had a Facebook account for a few months now but I have been a lot more active in the past 2 to 3 weeks. I think this is because more and more of my friends now have Facebook accounts. I used to try to keep up with my friends' blogs on Xanga or Blogspot but it was just too much. I like how I can get a quick one sentence update on what everyone is doing or thinking. I also like the apps that can be added to your Facebook account.

I'm also now signed up to so many accounts, that I really battle to keep up. It feels as if I'm on the internet most of the time and I'm neglecting other friends. You're right, we must be careful not to allow it to get too much. Thanks for your response.

Not very, because I don't even have a facebook account. I just post here on mylot and get paid. Plus I do a bunch of other stuff online to make money. It's pretty easy to make money online.. when you know where and how to do it.

I have friends in different cities and countries, and I love being able to look at them together on one page. It's a way that I can remember to stay in touch. I know what you mean about all the smiles and flowers. I have a long list of those things to which I haven't responded. What I do is I pick the things I like and once or twice a week, I send my friends flowers, or "endangered hugs" or even virtual Vuitton gifts. I don't think people expect you to respond to all their posts. You're allowed to get a warm happy feeling that they are thinking about you. This past weekend I told my mom about Facebook. She's in her mid-seventies, but uses the computer like a pro. She has a long email list and likes to exchange photos with my cousins around the world. She loved the idea of having her own Facebook page and I was delighted to set it up for her. My cousins were thrilled to see their aunt in Facebook and I feel like her page is a veritable family gathering! You might even be able to communicate with your kids in ways that you might not in person :-) Have fun with it!

I guess I should get more active and search for friends. My problem is I don't have enough friends to register for the different "gimmics" :)

I check it a few times a day, just like e-mail. I don't really do much on it, though. It seems like a bit of a waste of time beyond just talking to people. I guess people who have hundreds of friends just have way more time than I do. ~shrug~

I agree with you. My children have so many friends and once they sit at the computer it seems that they stay there for ages. The problem with all these things is that once you start reading and browsing, time seems to just disappear. Thank you for your response.

I use Facebook quite a lot and check it at least a couple of times a day. I don't tend to add applications but use it to keep in contact with friends from home that have gone to other universities and to keep up to date with events that are happening within my department and on campus. I don't really message people on it that often, sometimes just as a hello to old friends or if I need to get in contact with someone from my department but don't have a number for them.

Yes, I see that my daughter also mostly keeps in contact with her school friends. And other friends from back home. What I enjoy most, is the photo's that they post. In this way we can really keep in contact with each other. Sometimes their "status" upsets me when I see that they're not happy or a bit negative. But then I quickly send them a sticky note or write on their Super Wall or something like that...
