Have Your (dis)liking for Some Food Changed Over Years!?...Why?

While eating boiled rice today, I recalled how much I disliked them some years ago, so much that they will make my appetite sink. But, because of someone, whose company I cherish to no ends, and who likes them very much, I ended up liking them myself! What about you, has it ever occurred to you that your liking/disliking for something took an about turn? Was there a catalyst/motivation or is it that it just happened? Did it happen abruptly or gradually?

No. I haven't had that happen with food. Once i try something and I don't like it, I don't like it and I will never have it again.Even if my favorite movie star wanted me to re-try it , I wouldn't. And I haven't had it happen with people either.Once you say or do something that makes me dislike or even hate you, nothing will change my mind. But I have been sorry to hear that a "enemy" had lost a parent and I was sorry. Back in the day, Tony Dorsett, a Dallas Cowboy, had lost his mom and even though he played for the team I hate, Hate, I was really sorry to hear about his mom.But usually once you make my enemy list you are Never taken off. I still don't like George Clooney because of something he said 13 years ago. " Sticks and stones may break my bones but words cause permanent damage." But I have had a song that I didn't like at first become a song I liked. It was " Two Princes" by Spin Doctors. It is one of those songs that can and will stick in your head. You can dance to it and when it came out, I didn't like it. I never hated it so maybe that is why I could get to like it.I didn't hear it all that often and after a few months I got to like it. This is the only time I got to like a song after not really liking it.

No. I wouldn't try any vegetable even if it is made a different way.No, My feelings for Tony didn't change not at all.It is easy to get on either my friends list or my enemies list. To be my friend is easy, like and respect me and you are in. You should know that by now.And to get on my enemy list is easy too. Just be mean to me or be a hypocrite or lie to me or play for the wrong football, hockey,or baseball team.Or say or do a mean thing to or about someone I like.Friends could end up on the enemy list but enemies will Never make the friends list Ever. That is the main reason I could never consider myself a Christian. Christians Have to love their enemies.I would Never do that and lying to G-d by saying I will is wrong.

Thank you sarah, for coming back and responding to my questions. It would seem that getting on your enemy's list is 2.5 times easier than to be on your friend's list. Plus, it's a one way trip to enemy's list!:-)

Hello sarahruthbeth22!:-) Won’t you try even with variation such that it’s taste and look changes? I am asking because, like I said to previus poster, I didn’t like many vegetables but trying Chinese changed my feeling and I said, well, I could try them differently and now I can at least eat almost all of them! I really appreciate that you can still empathise with someone, you personally don’t like, if they lose a beloved. Did it change your feelings about Tony? Is it easier to get on your enemy list or your friend’s list? So, at least, you have the capability of changing your liking as you did with that song. What caused you really like it after disliking? Thanks for sharing!:-)

I've been a very finnicky eater all my life, and I remember when it first started: My older brother is much more picky than I am about what he would eat, and liked almost nothing. I wanted to be liked him and started to refuse to eat things like condiments, vegetables, etc etc. Now that I'm older I've found that I still have no desire for a lot of these things, but I have been adventurous and tried things that I thought I wouldn't like. Surprise, surprise, I'm often finding out that a lot of the stuff I used to refuse to touch really isn't that bad, and in some cases very good. In moderation of course...

Hello filmbuff!:-) How are you going, my friend!? I do hope that you are fine and feeling better!:-) I have been finicky in my youth too, which isn’t that far past anyway, but now I am tolerant of just about anything which I think is fine, I do still have some very strong dislikes though! It’s interesting that your brother inspired your abstentions, was it for religious reasons or some type of allergy or he just didn’t like things? Trying new things can be very interesting, I have tried few things here which I thought I wouldn’t like, and like you, found them good or even great in some cases. Was your reason about not to touch stuff, like your brother? Or a personal dislike? Thanks for sharing anyway!:-)

He just didn't like stuff, and doesn't like authority. Telling him he had to eat something meant that he never would, just out of rebellion. I did it at first to emulate him I think, and then I just lost a taste for most types of food and settled on the bland, the sweet and the salty. There are some exceptions, and I am much more advertures with what I will eat, but I still like many things that pack a huge overpowering flavor.

Yes, that happened to me too. There were some foods I couldn't even think about eating when I was a kid. I would eat them and I would spot them even if my mom mixed them all up in a soup and mashed the whole thing together:) I don't know what made the changes but there are indeed foods that I enjoy now that I never did before. THe opposite doesn't seem to have happened however. I still like most of the foods that I used to like when I was a kid. TO be honest I am not really sure of how the changes happened, if they were fast or gradual, I just started realizing that I actually liked some foods that I didn't like before.

Yes the feeling was pretty much coming as betrayal LOL mom knew I didn't like it but she still kept trying to trick me to eat it hehehehe the truth was that mom knew it was good for me and was trying to get me to at least have some, but of course I didn't see it that way then :) I also think that age might have something to do with this change in tastes although I am not really sure why or how. Maybe it has to do with a more open mind to try things. Regardless of the reasons it happens, and I"m actually happy it happened to me, because many of the new things I like are quite healthy :)

I liked your point about our parents trying to guide our way to something that is better for us! just that we don't see that in that age:-) And yes, I too am happy to have tried new things, we were just missing something!:-)

Hello arkaf61, Spotting something, which I didn’t like, mixed up with other things used to make me feel as if I were betrayed. LOL! But, it’s ok now, at lest for the most part!:-) It is possible that one doesn’t know how the changes happened; I think age itself has a moderating influence on our likes and dislikes, eh? I know that I can now eat many things that I wouldn’t even touch in my prime youth!;-) Thanks for sharing!:-)

Long time ago I didn't like eating celery at all because of its special flavor. We had a farm train in high school for a week. At that time there were no more food there. Everyday the food would be a little celery only and I didn't be full. Since I felt hungry and there was no choice to have another food. So I had to eat it. And after that, I like eating it.

Sometimes some uneasy experience make us change our liking/disliking, youless, and it appears to be true in your case. So, while I am sorry about the difficult time you had, I am glad you found yourself liking something you didn't like earlier! Thanks for sharing!:-)

When I was little I hated pepper (still don't like it much), couldn't eat anything that was even slightly spicy, hated spinach and would only eat fish fingers and garden peas. Now I eat absolutely anything. I still can't eat very spicy (hot) food but I'm getting better. That is due to the fact that I used to get an allergic reaction, my lips, tongue etc., would really swell up and it would terrify me. Now however, due to peer pressure as well as my B/F (who loves hot things but his stomach doesn't!) I am slowly indulging and cooking spicier and spicier things. The other day I even had a jalepeno stuffed with chorizo, got me running to the milk, yoghurts and anything else I could think of to cool that swelling down. It worked too! Now I ADORE spinach, especially fresh spinach. In salads, cooked with garlic hmmmm.... As for fish fingers, well if it is the last thing on the menu then I'll eat them otherwise no thanks!

Hello wickedangel, Wow, you have changed your eating habits quite a lot, impressive! I, too, like nearly everything that I didn’t like before, or at least I can eat them now. I love spicy food, my traditional foods are basically very spicy, but I have developed a taste for less spicy foods too, after coming here! Thanks for sharing!:-)

i have a liking for fish fingers now. 20 years ago i would have enlisted Yoda to rid myself of this calamity called food. i have a 6 year olddaughter who i love to take round the supermarket and keep my hand behind my back and ask her 'how many fingers am i holding up?' she will say , maybe, "4!" i will take my hand from behind my back and show a box of fish fingers and say "20!"

We have ampalaya/bitter melon, a vegetable that grows abundantly in my country that I really HATE eating while growing up and I would rather grow hungry than eat it because it is bitter. However, in my early twenties, I find that my taste shifted and I find myself liking them too much even it has a bitter taste. There are times that I like eating them everyday. I don't even know why I started eating them when I hated them in the first. I life them stir fried and mixed with some eggs. It is really good. I also found myself liking eating them raw with some vinegar. Yummy! But all my daughter could say now is YUCK! lol!

Wow, cdparazo, you have changed a lot in respect of ampalaya, from one extreme to another, that's interesting. I, too, find that I haven't liked many things in my earlier life that I do like now, and like you, I don't know why, for many of them! Haha! It seems that your daughter is following your footsteps. It would be interesting if she too starts liking them after some time. Hmmm, only time could tell! Thanks for sharing!-:)

I have foods that go both ways!!! First I will tell you about a food I no longer eat, but loved as a young child. Cottage Cheese. I loved to eat cottage cheese with honey (don't laugh, I was four) and with peaches. My grandmother didn't buy it often, but I would dive into it when she did. One time, my grandmother got a bad batch of it. I know that cottage cheese is nothing but the curds from sour milk, but if you get it fresh, it tastes totally different. This last batch however, wasn't fresh. I went to eat some, and got a mouthful of spoiled milk. I complained to my grandmother, saying that it tasted like such, and that's when I learned that's what it was. From then on, I haven't eaten cottage cheese. I did try once when I was twenty, but it still tasted the same (It was out on a salad bar, it could have gone bad too. Now, for the food that I didn't eat that I can't get enough of now. Greens!!! Collards, Kale, Mustard, Turnip, I just can't get enough Greens!!! But it wasn't always that way. As a kid I couldn't stand greens. They were too strong, they were bitter, and nasty. I used to exclaim "They taste like earwax!!!" My family had, and still has, greens at most family functions. I just loaded up on the potato salad. I wasn't eating them. Then one day, when I was about fourteen, my grandmother fixed some greens. She asked did I want some when she was fixing the dinner plates. I told her no, and told her why. She only replied that "Whoever cooked them must not have cooked them right, or they rushed them." (Which was totally true. My mom had cooked the last batch I was forced to try, and although she can cook, she is known to rush the food if she didn't want to cook it in the first place) So she gave me a few greens on my plate. I turned my nose up, but it was only about a forkful, so I figured that I could eat it and tell her the same thing I had told everyone else. I was wrong. Those greens were GOOOOOOOOD!!! I quickly ate the little bite that I was given, then immediately asked for some more. From then on, I have always eaten greens. Well, when that grandmother or her daughter, another one of my grandmothers, made them. My mom still rushes her greens and doesn't put enough seasoning in them, so hers are still nasty (Don't tell her I said that!!!) Since the first grandmother has passed, I will definitely be learning her daughter's, my grandmother's recipe for greens. I don't want to have to be stuck with my moms after she is gone lmao!!!

Hello drknlvly6781!:-) I Love Cottage Cheese, and there is nothing to laugh about trying anything. Hehe! If I tell you what I try and experiment, you sure would be laughing!:-) One, for example, was mixing Coca cola, Fanta with black pepper! Haha! I loved it! In fact, I added another thing too but I won't tell or else you would have no doubt that I am crazy! I love greens too, really, very much. You have a good point about how it is made matters and your grand mother was absolutely right too. I can see it, there is a heck lot of difference in taste when I make something and when my partner or mother make something. Of course, they are better, I just can't either get the combination right or the seasoning wrong! LOL! but, it still is edible! Best of luck with learning the recipe, and thanks for sharing!:-)

When I was young and living at home I didn't like vegetables at all. I think it could have been because we mainly had canned vegetables or iceberg lettuce salad. I went out for Chinese for the first time and had those wonderful stir fried vegetables. I've been in love with vegetables ever since. whit

Hello ciciwillio, Welcome to mylot, hope you will enjoy your stay here!:-) I am very choosy in sea food myself. It has to do, in part, with religious reasons, but even if that reason wasn't there, I guess I won't be eating much sea food anyway! Hmmm, I understand how in pregnancy one can crave for something or dislike others! Thanks for sharing!:-)
