I think it's because it comes at a slow (sportswise) time of year and it gives people a lift especially if you follow basketball which is the only sport I do follow. March Madness is probably most popular in parts of the country that have good college basketball teams. I live outside Philadelphia and we have a lot of college teams (Penn, Drexell, St. Josephs, Villanovaa etc) At least one of them usually gets to the big show in March and this year there are three. I'm rooting for Villanova which is near my house. March Madness is huge in this area.
