I need your help

March 22, 2008 4:21am CST
Morning Please i really need your help for a friend of mine. He has just found out he has diabetes. He is an older man who lives on his own, he needs to manage his diabetes with tablets and diet but he is struggling with the diet bit of the illness. Can you suggest any good web sites that could help him work out what foods he can eat and what he can't or if you have any information that you could share with me. I would be most grateful for your support on this matter. Look forward to hearing from you all.

He does go to the doctor but as he is not managing his diet very well, the doctor is saying he might have to have injections. He said he was not keen on that. So i just thought i might be able to help him as he does not have access to the internet.

People with Diabetes should not be deprived from eating food that they want to eat. The key, however, is M-O-D-E-R-A-T-I-O-N. Another important thing is EXERCISE and brisk walking is the best. This will normalize your blood sugar count, believe me!

Hun is diabetic, and has been in denial for a few years... now that his kidneys are in jeopardy and he is fully insulin-dependant, he's eating like he should. Vegetables, more than anything else. Fish and chicken, eggs if there isn't a cholesterol problem. Only whole-grain breads, and not a lot of them. Fiber, alternative sweeteners, protein, portion control... and READ LABELS! All the websites are good, but the first thing he MUST do is talk to the dietician or nutritionist the doctor will send him to. They will give him materials he can use to plan his meals. It isn't hard as long as he is willing to do it... stubbornness doesn't hurt the disease, it just hurts the body the disease is in!

Thank you! Are things working out? I know I've been losing more... the challenge is in toning. Old flesh doesn't respond well to the light exercise which is all I can do. But I'm still trying!

I'm diabetic too and even though it is difficult sometimes, picking the right foods gets easier everyday. I always use recipezaar.com to find some great diabetic recipes.

When he was diagnosed they should have asigned him a couple of appointments with a diatician. The best advice my doctor gave to me was to keep my carbohydrates down to a certain amount per day. She worked it out to points, every 14 grams of carbohydrate that a certain food has is worth 1 point. So if something has 28 carbohydrates it is worth 2 points. I am allowed 17 points per day. There is a bonus though if you eat something that has 5 grams of fiber or more you get a point back. So if you eat something that has 28 carbs. but has 5 grams of fiber then that only counts for 1 point. There is a big incentive to find products that are low in carbs or high in fiber, or both. The best thing is to measure and be careful with things that have white flour in them. He can eat them but needs to keep the portion sizes really small. Read the box, you will find that most serving sizes for pasta items are only 1/4 cup.
