How often do you go to the loo for the Big DUMP?

I just attended a seminar on health and learned a new interesting fact. Did you know that regular bowel movement of 2-3 times a day is normal? If you only go like once a day, it is considered as a mild form of constipation by some health professionals. According to the seminar, the speaker was saying that our bodies are able to process the food we eat pretty quickly. In withing 4-5 hours of eating, the food would have been completed digested from the stomach and on its long journey through the intestines to the colon for removal. So I sat back and looked at my own habits. Depending on the quantity of food I take in, I do not go as often as what the speaker is saying. On days where there is less in take of food, naturally we would go less as there is no waste to get rid of in the first place! So, my question is, how often do you go to dump the big load?

I think its wrong to generalize this particular habit. The surveys always do not give a clear picture. Going by ancient Ayurveda texts which are by far the best guide, bowel movements above 2 times is not good. 2 times is a NORMAL situation. 1 time on a regular & compulsory basis is the best. Going one up on this sometimes is fine, but going even once below this is very bad. Also the early morning is preferable. So going once very early in the morning makes you a YOGI- an ascetic. 2 times makes you a BOGI- somebody having the best of life with some indulgence 3 or more times a day makes you a ROGI- one with illness. Not going at all makes you a MAHA-ROGI - which means one with a bigger illness

Wow! This is great. I am going to catch hold of my husband for saying I have bad health since I go 2-3 times a day and he goes just once. The only difference is I can't see when I feel like it but he always has it early in the morning as soon as he wakes up!! He gets irritated if I need to go to loo when we go out shopping.

I guess the bowel habits of each individual is unique. No one can fault the other for their habits. If you gotta go, you gotta go. Cos when Mother Natures call, the A-hole will respond. No two ways about it.

I usually take a big dump a couple of times a day. Not "that often," but not so often that it's uncomfortable. You brought up an interesting point, though. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for sharing this information here on MyLot.

hmm this is really interesting information. quite the contrary from what i learn from some healthcare professionals. did the speaker mention that when constipated try not to take fibre? that's the latest research result. fibre gives bulk to our stool. so eating more fibre will only make the stool harder, thus more difficult to pass out. i've heard that going once in the morning is the best. although it takes only takes 4hrs to completely digest a stomach-full of food, we have to allow the food to slowly pass through our 6m long small intestine for complete absorption of nutrients. so it's common to see remnants (undigestable bits) of our dinner in our stool the next morning. if you see remnants of your last meal, then maybe it's not that good afterall. :D

That is what I read as well. This contrasts with what we learn when we were kids. Grandma used to say, if one is constipating, one should take more fibre to aid in the digestion so that the stool can pass out easier. Now the dietitian are singing a different and opposite tune. Which one to believe then?
