Cake for Breakfast?

First, some background. I wanted some chocolate yesterday. My husband was napping so dinner was late, but I needed chocolate. I decided to make chocolate cake (used a mix because it was quicker) and homemade chocolate frosting. Yummmmm! Now since I made the frosting myself, I had to taste it as I went along, right? I mean, you have to know if it's got enough chocolate, or needs more butter, right? By the time the cake was cool enough to frost and eat, it was close to 10:00 pm. Again, dinner was late and now cake on top of that. Yep, I ended up with a tummy ache. Not actually an upset tummy or anything, just FULL and it hurt to move. I knew it was a bad idea to go to bed feeling like that, but I crawled in anyway, thinking if I sat up reading for a bit, everything would be fine. WRONG ... I had the craziest dreams all night; people I knew, pets I've owned, places I've been, all mixed up into different locations and odd time frames. I don't think a single bit of any scene made a lick of sense. It was a pretty rough night and I'm sure if it weren't for my husband's hearing problem, he probably would have tossed me out of the bed. They say dreams usually last no more than 2 minutes, but oh no, this was an all nighter for sure. I knew I shouldn't have had that big piece of chocolate cake with yummy homemade chocolate frosting, I just knew it. So ... Cake for breakfast?

If your tummy can take it why not? As Bill Cosby says, it has eggs, it has flour, it has milk! Sounds like a breakfast food to me!!!

Exactly! (Hi Dawn!) I didn't exactly have it for breakfast, I had toast with PB first, then ate the cake a bit later.

Hi back! I usually eat pretty sensibly for breakfast but every once in a while it's cold pizza or cake or something silly (too many jelly beans this Easter, for example). Gotta have fun once in a while even if it results in the occasional tummy ache!

Well, the way I look at it cake isn't any worse than the sugar cereals many eat for breakfast so why not? (And I actually eat cake in a bowl with milk, so...) Sorry you had a rough night...yeah, that is kinda late to have your cake and eat it too!

Bwaahaahaaa!!! Cake in milk...? I am about to go get a bowl of cereal, I don't eat it for breakfast hardly ever but it sure is a great midnight snack! Cake sounds good but I don't have any.

well now you know lol, but for me I guess I am one of the lucky ones, I do not have bad dreams because of eating, i just wake up sick all the time, because of fibromyalgia, always full of aches and pains.

I don't think it was so much the eating itself, it was the amount I ate (plus all the sugar) and how late it was. I didn't let my tummy settle much at all, it was very, very full when I went to bed. (Was still worth it)

I love cake for breakfast. But it doesn't love me. I just get the stomach ache without the dreams. Cheese is my bedtime no no. Then I get very vivid dreams and the tummy too.

I don't think it was actually the cake that did it, the fact that I went to bed feeling so full of ANYTHING was probably the issue.

LOL. When I worked I found that we used to eat later and later. That had a dire effect on my digestive system. Now we try to get the meal finished by 7.30 at the latest. Night time is more comfortable as a result.

Why not? Cake is one thing I can eat at any given time. Cake and me... we are BFFs. I can have it anyway too... with vanilla ice cream on top or with whipped cream, chopped nuts. I am nuts. I can have cake for breakfast and slices of bacon and over easy eggs and a glass of tomato juice. Why not? I am hormonal right now. I'm having a baby so throw in whatever there is, I am hungry. I don't care about combination. As far as I'm concern, there is no rules to follow about breakfast... just eat all you can and stop when you are full., right?

You know, I love fresh coconut chunks (like off the big coconut itself) but I don't usually like things with coconut flakes on them, regular coconut frosting, and I don't like Mounds candy bars and such. Ick ... But I love German Chocolate Cake!

Well according to Mr. Biddle in "The Happiest Millionaire" chocolate cake is the perfect diet. It has all the essential needs covered. Cute movie if you haven't seen it but I see nothing wrong with it now and then. No worse then having Belgium waffles or some of the other things they serve for breakfast. Might actually be better then some actually. I haven't had homemade frosting though in ages and it does sound good. Might have to see what mixes we have in the house. Don't have the frosting but I can always make a bundt cake with a glaze. Thanks for the ideas.

I prefer a lighter frosting. Buttercream frosting is often too rich for me. I like the ones made with whipped creme over it. Of course though I like brownies too and those can be very good any time but especially when you are craving chocolate.

I can handle a boxed cake mix (still much prefer scratch, though), but I really don't like canned frosting. It's so easy to make your own too, so why not?

Bless Your Heart! I hope you got over your tummy ache. Isn't it strange how the things that we eat can sometimes affect the way we sleep?? I have had some things like that happen to me before. I bet the cake was good though LOL Shelia

I don't know if it was worth the rough night, but it sure was good. Since it's all over with, I guess I'll say it was worth it. My husband and I just finished off the cake after lunch.

Yeah, sure. Why not? Might be just what you need to quiet your mind after such an active night sleep. Is homemade chocolate icing easy to make? Care to share the recipe?

No real recipe. Just confectioner's sugar, butter, and chocolate cocoa powder, adding just a spoonful of milk here and there until you get the right consistency. No recipe means you have to taste it as you go along, which compounded my problem the other night!

It sounds like your brain malfunctioned! Cake is the same as donuts and pastry so it is eaten for breakfast quite often! I would make it healthy if possible, like banana bread or carrot cake! All I need with it is a cup of tea or soymilk!

The only difference in the time of day is how it might affect your pancreas! Too much sugar in the morning, especially on an empty stomach, is said to shock the pancreas!

I'm sure there's more sugar in what I made than the normal donut, but what difference does it make what time of day it is eaten? It's still not good for me! Mmmm, I love carrot cake too ...

Hi Laura! It was a crazy night, to be sure. I've had some weird dreams in my day, but this was a very long night, totally mixed up with nonsensical garbage.

Sounds like a case of chocolate induced halusinations. I think my wife gets those. She thinks I don't know about her chocolate stach but I do. No more cake before bed young lady.

I have tried that before, that is ok! I think! but I have to eat cake with coffee, otherwise the cake is to sweet for me! And I have a really Asian stomach, so most of time I enjoy the breakfast in Asian style! But that is always good to have some superise

I have never had a problem with it but my husband does. everytime he eats cake or chocolate befor he goes to bed he has a terrible sleep.I think it must be something in the chocolate that does that to some people. Not me i love chocolate and can eat it anytime of the day without a problem.

Hi Sweetie! I'm a chocolate lover any time of the day or night, so I don't think it was just the fact that it was chocolate. The combination of a good sized piece of cake with all that sugar not long after supper, and going to bed with all of that sitting right smack in the middle of my tummy I think is what did me in.

I have never had tummy issues from having cake for breakfast. I know that it is not the healthiest breakfest option (unless you live in Bill Cosby's world! LOL), but I have a severe sweet tooth!

I don't normally have that problem either, but I was definitely way too stuffed to be going to bed when I did. I paid for it, but it was oh, so good!

I don't eat sweets, nor do I eat breakfast, so the answer to the question, "cake for breakfast?", would be a NO. And since you gave the history of your experience with eating it so late and so much of it, I doubt I would do it at bedtime either. Thanks for the tip.

It wouldn't have been so bad except that I had eaten supper late too. All that in a short time was just too much. I should have waited longer to go to bed.

You know, a lot of people like cold pizza but I don't. I don't like cold chicken either. Either of them warmed up is fine, I just don't like them cold.

Oh yes she did. - No more late nite snacks their my friend.
Oh poor Marie Anne, I have been there and done that. I do not eat so much before bed either. Not because of bad dreams, but because I always wake up and end up having to get rid of the waste from all that food. I hate that, middle of the nite stuff. But it usually works and then I am finaly able to sleep soundly. Now as for cake for breakfast, yum sounds good with a nice warm cup of coffee..mmm

Getting up to potty isn't usually an issue for me, unless I wake up from something else. Then of course you have to make a trip to the loo before you can get back to sleep. All is well. Cake is gone (for now!)
