Making bread

I was thinking about getting a bread maker for the house. We seem to go through a lot of loaves of store bought bread. The prices seem to be rising too. I was thinking that a way to save a little bit of money and maybe make something a little healthier would be to make my own. Do you have a bread maker and do you use it? Do you feel it would be worthwhile or a waste of money?

I have one and I would use it, but then I myself, would eat the whole loaf! Just give me the loaf and some cold butter and that would be lunch! I use it to make pizza crust and those are good. But I like to make banana bread with it, and then there I go, sit and eat the whole loaf! Healthy or not, guess it depends on HOW you use it, not what it offers!!! but, yeah, with a loaf of bread at $3 or more, I think it is 3 cups of flour -a 5 lb bag of flour and some yeast and bit of margarine - it just might be cheaper. Only probly I have is it is hard to slice for sandwich use. Just to slice to go with a meal is no problem, but for a nice sandwich, I can't make that happen. So, jsut give me the loaf and some butter and I am okay - forget the meat and lettuce!!! It sure is good and I don't believe they are that expensive. The one I got makes one loaf but has the option to make 1 lb or 1,1/2 lb loaf. You can buy one that makes 2 loaves.

I have two of them! I love them. I can't really say if it would be a waste of money for you, though...I know a few people who say "oh I have one but I never use it..." *shrug* I love the smell of baking bread, I love making different varieties, I also make pizza dough in it- YUM!!

That sounds like a plan if you can make your own. You would have to compare your cost vs paying retail. Homemade is always best and healthier too.

The bread mixes are good, but oh man talk about expensive. If you could come up with some good recipes using ingredients you have on hand, or wouldn't be very expensive, that would be great, but just to buy the prepackaged mixes cost way too much.

Do buy a breadmaker!!! I have had one for a couple of years and I love it! You can find yummy recipes on www.cooks.com . I make loaves for under a buck a piece.

I LOVE my bread machine and use it all the time, however, I rarely bake the bread in the machine just because I do not care for how it turns out. I find I get a bigger, lighter (less dense) loaf, if I use the machine for everything except baking, and then bake the loaf in my regular oven. As some others have said, it is also great for making pizza dough. Talk about a huge money saver, homemade pizza is a fraction of the cost of delivery.

Yes I have a bread machine which I have had for awhile now and I certainly would not be without it. If it broke tomorrow I would go straight into town to get another one. I use it most days and since I have had it I have never bought any bread from the supermarket

Do it! Get a breadmaker! They are just superb & I think every household should have one. I've actually got two! One is for everyday, and I use the other one if we have guest and I need a larger loaf or even two loaves. There's really nothing better than a slice of warm homemade bread with some homemade damson jam on :-) Sometimes I get the loaf out of the machine, then have to put another on straight away as we've eaten it all! If you get a machine, play around with the recipe. I've tweaked mine so that I have a loaf which we enjoy, but i can add different liquids, seeds, choccy chips or whatever to make a more luxury bred. Enjoy!
