Help With Exercise

I have been told by my doctor that I need to lose a few pounds but with the fibromyalgia exercising is difficult. I have been told that water aerobics is good but unfortunately where I live, I do not have access to a pool. I also have been told that Yoga helps but the stretching kills me and makes my pain worse. Does anyone have any suggestions for what they do to exercise. I would appreciate some help.

I have had fibromyalgia for 12 years. I spent the first five years suffering. Then I made two changes. One, I started taking Mag-Citrate (Magnesium/Malic Acid). It really helps with the pain. Two, I started walking. I started slowly walking around the block. Eventually I made it farther and farther until I was up to 3 miles. If I start to hurt while walking I slow down until the pain eases up and then I pick up the pace again. The way I see it, I am going to feel pain in my legs at night anyway so taking on the extra pain added by walking is no big deal. It does make me tired at the end of the day and helps me to get to sleep at night. Those two treatments are what have helped me the most with my fibro.

I think you should try walking. I think it is the easiest exercise. With the lovely spring weather coming up it is very uplifting to walk outdoors in the sunshine. Even when it is not sunny, it helps physically, spiritually and mentally. Exercise releases chemicals that are natural anti-depressants - not to say that you don't need to be on anti-depressants if you are. I know I will have to be on them forever because I have tried going off and have experienced the results. Not pretty. But that's another story. Magnesium aids in over 300 bodily functions. Fibromites are severely lacking in magnesium. Magnesium with Malic Acid has proven to help a lot with leg cramps, menstrual cramps, and overall pain. I live in a town of 26,000 people. Only 3 stores sell it (2 health food stores, one pharmacy in a grocery store) and one day I went into them all and found they were sold out. I went a week or two without the Mag-Citrate and I could definitely feel in the increase in overall body pain. There are different doses. One store had it but only 100mg capsules. I take 4 250mg. pills a day. I was taking 3 but accidentally bought Calcium/D without the magnesium so upped the Mag-Citrate for the time being. I will go back to 3 once I am back on the Cal/Mag/D. I get my magnesium from a multi-vitamin as well. But the malic acid is also important. You don't need a prescription for it. It is a mineral supplement. It may be called something else where you are but make sure it is MAGNESIUM AND MALIC ACID. Some names can deceive you when they are acutally Magnesium and Calcium (like Cal-Citrate). Magnesium helps Calcium work, by the way, which is why Cal/Mag/D is also important to take... for everybody. I take two of those a day. My husband takes one a day. I also take a B-Complex vitamin supplement. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I participate on a fibromyalgia message board and run the support group in my town. I have a vast knowledge of the illness and its treatments. Good luck!

Wow, I know where you're coming from. I too heard that water aerobics work great, but I have to go 15 or so miles to get use of any pools, and then I have to have a membership. With gas prices the way they are, and memebership fees, too ugh! I can't afford both. But, stretching; that usually helps me, if I do them right. I have to be careful when I do them, as with anything I do. I hope you get soem answers on this, because I could use them, too. God Bless.

Believe me I know what you mean. It's not easy. I try just doing little things. I may not be able to do full routines or anything but I can try swinging my legs while I'm sitting or walking a few houses a way and back again. It isn't much but it does add up and sometimes I can walk a bit further. Finding little things I can do and do them over and over, like bringing my hand up to my shoulder. Flexing the inner muscle type thing. I hope this helps

Maybe try your local library for some different videos. That way you could try some out and see which ones don't make you sore. Then maybe you can find a good deal on the same video online or at a local Goodwill store.
