some psychologists believe that when the gap between your ideal self and yourself increases, you become more depressed. Why?

Well the way I see it, is that when you are not who you want to be, it can be upsetting. For example: If I want to become less selfish, but as this want increases, I start becoming more selfish, it is going to make me feel badly about myself. The same goes with psychical appearences. If I want to be thin, but eat so much that I gain 10 pounds, its going to effect me psychologically. Sometimes this happens if your ideal self is unrealistic. People need to learn to exept themselves for who they really are, rather than trying to change themselves.

I too wholly agree..............if you are what you dream{your ideal self} then you will be very happy......or else you will mourn too much and get depressed............the best person is the one who sets himself as the ideal self and not other stars etc...........the less the gap between the dream yourself and the actual self ,the more contended you are, then ultimately the more happy you are. Cheers ! Have a nice day. ========== Impossible just says " I 'm possible" ==========

Thank you :) I don't actually study psychology in school, but I enjoy reading books on it. I also got my answer from past experiences.
