Today has been hard...

and I'm counting my blessings. We got information today that has made me realize how oblivious I've been, and how I can't afford to be that way in the future. About 2 weeks ago, our daughter was leaving rather late. I was on the porch saying good-night as she went down the walk... I always stay there until I'm sure the kids are safely in their cars. She turned and came back, saying she was blocked in by police cars... we'd been out there for at least 15 minutes, and hadn't heard a thing. About that time all he!! broke loose... a kid came running down the street with 2 officers after him. They tackled him at the end of the street, then mostly dragged him back to the car, shoving him in the backseat. We went out to the gate, and there were 4 cars out there. An officer came to talk to us... it seems the kid had been hiding in our yard (!), then went over the fence and tried to climb up to a balcony on the building next door. He was spotted, and thats when he started running. I assumed that this was the person who'd been breaking into cars, and after we told the officers 'Good work', we came back inside. Today we found out that this kid (17 or 18) was trying to set fire to a house across from us. As you may know, the house behind us burned to the ground recently... he admitted to setting it. We found out that he's burned 4 houses in town in the last year... luckily, no one was ever home. The thing that has me really shaking, though, is what our neighbor told us... he came out one morning and found a rag stuffed in his gas tank. He figured someone had been siphoning gas and so hadn't said anything. Now the neighbor between our houses said he found the same thing on the same day, and reacted the same way. What they didn't notice was that the rags had been lit on the end... the kid admitted to being disappointed because they went out! I can't even imagine what the explosion would have been like... we have little kids on our block, and elderly people across the street. It would have killed everyone! When I told our daughter, she was terribly upset, because she has seen this kid nearly every time she's gone home, either in our block or walking towards town. He's scheduled for a competency hearing soon... I know he HAS to be crazy to do things like this, but he needs to be put away for a very long time. And I need to snoop out the window and watch whats going on... I swore I never would, but things have changed!

Wow... I can imagine that this has made you feel very uneasy, and also made you realise how alert and quick-thinking you have to be these days. We all tend to go about our daily lives oblivious to the things that go on outside our little corner, until something like this slaps us back into reality. You can't be accused of snooping, my friend... more of a neighbourhood watch member. You feel the need to watch over your family and closeby friends. You can't ignore the alert you had recently, so what else would you do? I'd be the same. Brightest Blessings.

I'll go out with my dogs and just look every once in a while... it will sure make me feel better! We've lived here over 30 years, and I never imagined it could get this serious... a thing that Hun pointed out to me as well is that twice when we've come home from town, our back door has been open! We keep it locked, and the recycle sorter is in front of it. If someone tried to come in, that slowed him down long enough for the dogs to get there and scare him away... see? Oblivious! I had forgotten that it had even happened!

It is too easy to be casual in a small town. I am glad all are safe.

It's all too easy to forget that you've locked the door before going out, and to ignore that something more untoward has possibly been going on. You obviously felt comfortable living where you do, and never dreamed you would have these sorts of problems. It would seem that by placing the recycle bin in front of your door, you have probably saved yourself from a worse fate... good thinking. Your dogs will know if there's anybody roaming about who shouldn't be, and if there's anything dodgy going on. Don't let it worry you too much, but just stay alert. That's all you can do really, my friend.

Wow! That's horrible! I'm glad they caught him and I'm glad you and your family are alright. Snooping and looking out your window are two different things. Walking around and checking things is fine. Even if people were trying to syphon gas, I think calling the police would still be a good idea, because you never know what people could be doing with the gas! Is there a nieghborhood watch in your area? If there isn't, maybe there should be. Take care and I hope your area is much safer in the future.

I sure feel a lot safer now! The house that burned behind us was granting easements to our town to use part of their property as an alley... now that the house is gone, they've fenced off the entire property. Only 4 people have keys, so no one can get back there with a vehicle, and if 'they' come in on foot we can easily spot them since we've added an extra motion-sensor. Add to that the fact that we now have a 6-car police department... thats HUGE compared to what we've always had before. someone comes by about every 30 minutes, so I don't have to stand guard... just peek out once in a while.

If you are at home, your snooping is really doing a service. You are protecting the old people and the children who aroun on that block. I am glad he was not any more successful than that, as it could have had dangerous consequences. Do not consider yourself to be snoopy, but rather, vigilant.

Thank you... I am sending my dogs out more often, as well, because if anything is 'off', they know it! We are still finding out things this kid has done... I can't believe he got away with it for so long! And this has been a good lesson for the younger ones in the neighborhood... to always care that there are people in all the houses they see!

I'm glad we have good visibility around our yard during the daytime... and the dogs are usually out playing, now that the weather is better. The little Rat Terriers may not scare anyone, but the Schnauzer cornered a meter-reader the other day! Spud scared him pale, but didn't bite him... the guy has been told again and again that he can't read the neighbors' meter from our yard... I hope he understands why now!
