When i was a child i used to love Raspberry pips...little tiny boiled sweet coated in sugar....I used to get 2 ounces a day...with my daily threepenny bit!!!...they were weighed and wrapped in a little triangular paper bag... I was always a chubby child...which used to get on my nerves a bit...so one more than one occasion I used to go on my own version of a diet!!! I used to divide the raspberry pips up into three even tinier amounts...then i would tell myself that i was going to make them last three days instead of one day!!! Well how daft!!!...before i knew it all of my good intentions had gone...along with the raspberry pips!!! PS...im still chubby!!!!

I liked spangles and also flying saucers when I was a child in the 1950's. At that time there were not many sweets around as rationing had just finished

I must be about the same age as your husband and as I remember they were not many different sweets, we always like you looked for the best value

Hi Austin....hubby and myself are always talking about our childhoods...he has a very big family..he is one of eleven...originally twelve. Five boys chocolate...toffee bars... But we always say that these things were a real luxury...not an every day occurence!!!...at christmas there was an orange or apple..a few nuts,a small toy in the stocking...and in hubbys family there was a board game that they shared between them.My sister and i used to get the self same stocking...but with a second hand toy each!!! I just dont know what they would make of that in todays world!!! Playing was just that...out and about in the fresh air,down by the streams,watching the moorhens...we were both brought up in the countryside...and then it was perfectly safe to go a wandering...but today you wouldnt dare let the children do that. On rare occasions Mum used to make toffee...hubbys Mum used to make tablet...and that was pure bliss!!!

I never got on too well with Spangles....flying saucers were the little rice paper circleswith sherbet in i think?? My hubby was born late 1940s and he says there wasnt a massive variety around then..Im A wee bit younger..but i cant really remember ever getting that much choice!!!..first of all the cost was of huge importance...and value for your money the second !!....we used to tend to have 2 ounces of something...and make them last!!! I remember plainly if i had a packet of crispa ..which wasnt very often..there were only Smiths crispa about then!!..any way..I used to squeeze the packet..and crush the crisps...and eat the tiny bits..relishing them..making them last a long time!!!...then a good while later..Golden wonder came in!!!

My favorite is peanut butter eggs. It's sad that they are only on the shelves during Easter. And reese's cups just are no substitute.

I had loads of favourites. I liked the Blackjack Chews, Banana and Toffee Split, Rhubarb and Custard, Aniseed Balls, Milk Bottles, Cough Candy, and Spearmint Chews. You don't see a lot of those about these days, do you? I loved the loose sweets in the glass jars, and like you, bought them in two-ounce paper bags. Brightest Blessings.

All those sweeties!! - spearmint chews and aniseed balls!!
I can taste those milk bottles now!!!..aniseed balls!!..and gob stopppers!!!..the gob stopers used to change colour as you sucked them!!!!...aniseed ballls that stained your mouth.....spearmint chews..they were great. We werent allowed chewing gum..it was classed as being dirty stuff!!..but we used to buy it sometimes ..in secret!....wrigleys and PK.. i was never a massive cough candy fan,i preferred the sugary sweet things!

Well Stocked Sweet Shop - Sweet Shop shelves laden with jars of loose sweets.
He he... I knew the milk bottles would get ya! Because of their weight and size, you used to get lots of them in a 2oz bag, and they were also good value because they took a bit of chewing. Yes, chewing gum was taboo for me too. I wasn't allowed that until in my teens.
@ruby222 (4847)
5 Apr 08
No you arent allowed!! - no bubble gum for us...
Nor me!!!..my parents always said that we would choke on it...and bubble gum was a no no as well...the meanies...lol...but i can see where they were coming from now that im older!!

My favorite sweets were and still are, ice cream. I love most kinds of it. That is why I don't keep it in the house very often because I would go way over board in eating it. I try to be careful about my sweets now. All through out high school, I was a size zero all through high school. So, I didn't really worry about how unhealthy it was. I have gained some weight since then and now have trouble getting the weight off. That's part of the reason I can't keep ice cream in the house.

I may be asking a really dumb question here, but what is that kind of ice cream? I have never heard of it. I love most kinds of ice cream. I love chocolate ice cream with peanut butter in it. I would have to say that is my favorite.

I used to love those pips too, and rhubarb and custard sweets and sherbet and cherry lips, actually I just liked a lot of sweets! I have some rhubarb and custard soap at the minute and that smells so much like the sweet I am surprised I have not eaten it yet!! You can still buy some of the same sweets today, but in my opinion they just do not taste the same!
@ruby222 (4847)
4 Apr 08
Just for Rose - all those cherry lips..those were the days!!!
Yes ..you can still buy a lot of them today Rose...but im not really sure if they are as good as then!!! Do you remember Merry maid caramels????...if you were rich you had a quarter pound of those!!!! Rhubarb and custard is still one of my favourites... I remember giving the kids 10p when they came home from school..they used to go and get a 10p mix!!!! Some shops still do a mix even now.. The only ones i can remember not liking too much were clove balls....they were orrible...but lol given a clove ball or nothing..youd take the clove ball!!!
@gemini_rose (16264)

My father would always give me his change out of his pocket everyday. Usually about 2 dollars worth of change. I could buy a lot of candy back then. My favorite candy was bubble gum. I could chew ton of it.Needless to say I have lots of trouble with my teeth as an adult because of that. I also liked chocolate and got my share and more of that as a child.

I liked Pop Rocks and funny bones. My brother liked Big League Chew. I still like chocolate. But I am a chocolate snob. Cheap chocolate tastes harsh to me. I like dark chocolate - belgian chocolates and organic chocolate.

Yes, there is some really gross candy out there. Not all chocolate that is inexpensive is bad, but I had a real harsh tasting chocolate bunny shaped piece of candy this Easter. And then I read the ingredients and was sorry I did...

We had a little mom-n-pop store just around the corner all through my childhood:) They carried small boxes of small jaw breakers. I LOVED them! I could make a box last a week...lols Another item they carried were single pieces of licorice. I loved the black. It was so yummy. But my favorite sweet of all time was my grandmother's bananna moose! Bananna pudding, with sliced banannas, and tons of whipped topping...it was soooo good!

Once when i was staying with Granny..I gave up my sweet money..what a mug lolol...not really..and i bought Mum a lipstick..it was a bright orangy colour..oh i thought it was marvellous!!!!!

when I was young i wasn't allowed sweets very often. But occassionally we'd be allowed to choose ourselves 10 or 20 pence worth from the newsagents. That might not sound like very much now, but this was back when there were still halfpenny sweets! We'd be able to pick them ourselves & pop them in a little silver foil dish, then the newsagent would double check them & they'd go in a little white paper bag. they'd normally last all the way home & normally for the rest of the day too. The love of little individual sweeties has stayed with me, but it's not very often that you see a range of them on display any more where you can choose one of those and one of those. My favourite back in those days was a rather garish coloured pink & white foam mushroom. Today I'm still rathr keen on any of the jelly sweets that are covered in the sort of sour sugar that makes you go 'oooh!' & pucker up. You can buy whole bags of it as Haribou Sour Mix & I once age an enture bag at a sitting (stressful day at work) & all the chemicals must have shot straight into my bloodstream as my face went bright red & I glowed for the rest of the afternoon!

Hi Ruby When i was younger my mother would be always making something sweet..she wasn't a cook but she sure could bake and every get together she would be the one to bring the goodies. her fudge, lemon meringue pies and pastries were so popular, its a shame she didn't have a bakery! if i went to the store it was licorice(black) and anything chocolate..now its the same.

Hi Rose...well though Mum made toffe..she was a very good plain cook..but definately not a cake maker..lol...we used to come home from school and there on the work surface on a plate..was a frisbee.but it was Mums sponge!!!!...she used to give us that look that spoke volumes...so we didnt comment....later when the frisbee was cool...she would top it off with icing...and we ate it for pudding!!!!!!

My sweet of choice has to be Parma Violets. An odd taste I know- almost like eating perfume. But I loved them, I also rationed them to make them last longer. For those who don't know what Parma Violets are- they are a lovely fragrant type of hard candy. They are like little lilac coloured tablets and come wrapped in plastic. I imagine them to be the older more sophisticated sister of Love Hearts and Refreshers (which are made by the same company). Hmmmm I am now craving these lovely sweets, and luckily you can buy them online!
