Are background checks fair for employees?

I haven't but I recent heard of someone who was applying for a job and was hired only to lose the job when the BG check came back. Apparently something from his past came back to haunt him. Do you think BG checks give a true estimate of the person you are dealing with?

it is fair for the company to do a back ground check, because the company is paying all this money to train a person and to see if he will fit into their company...

Yes I do think they are needed however if there is something they dont like an employer should bring the applicant in to discuss it with them as I know many people who have done things in the past that they would not dream of doing now, and everyone deserves a chance.

i think background check is good for the company to know the person working for them. but it is also not fair for the employee because sometimes the person commits a mistake but the person also has the right to change his attitude. it is very confusing if it is good or not for either of them
