Our TV turns ON all by itself!... Does anyone elses?

Since we got our TV it turns on spontaneously all by itself. It is made by Magnavox. My mom gave it to us as a christmas present about 2 years ago and it has always done this. We were always so busy we never got around to taking it back or contacting the manufacturer. Has anyone else ever had this experience? I assume that maybe it is a short in the TV or something. To be safe, we always have it plugged into a surge suppressor and turn it off at the base so it won't come on by itself, especially when he aren't home and at night. It is pretty freaky sometimes (LoL)!

LoL I can't seem to remember at the moment which particular companies we were talking about but I will let you know if I remember. My brain isn't working right now. LoL

Ok that sounds scarey to me LOL Maybe the "on" button is stuck or something. I know I would be a little freaked out about that if it happened to me.

Hi maddysmommy - Yes, we were a little freaked out... especially the first time it happened. Everyone was looking at eachother with big wide eyes asking if the other one turned it on! If we forget to turn it off at the surge protector it comes on whenever it feels like it. Sometimes it will just come on a few times during the day, but other times it keeps coming on so often that it drives me nuts & I finally get up and turn it off at the surge protector switch. The "on" button is definitely not stuck or anything. It never turns "off" by itself... just on! Weird huh?!!

Hi gabs8513. I'm glad you figured out why your TV kept changing channels! I'm sure your family as well as your neighbors were very perplexed until you figured it out! :)

Sounds pretty weird. Have you been watching the movie Poltergeist? I have had TV sets that you could program to turn on at a certain time. Sort of like you do with your radio-alarm clock. When I worked the early shift, I used to program the coffee to start perking, and the TV to come on to CNN about ten minutes later. I got up at the same time as the coffee pot started, would shower, and then pour a cup of coffee and the news would be on waiting for me. Two things to check on your TV. Check to see if your TV is like the one I had, and maybe it has a default setting from factory that programmed it to turn it on. If it does, try setting the option to off. Second, while you may have it plugged into a surge protector, that protects (hopefully) the items plugged into it from voltage surges like lightning strikes near your home. The surge protector does not protect things from brown outs and other small fluctuations in power level. You can add a UPS - uninterruptable power source - also called battery back-ups. A UPS conditions the power besides providing surge protection. You can get UPS at a computer store. They run in the 40-70 dollar range that would take care of your TV and VCR. One last thing is remote controls. Not so much your TV's remote but other remote controls in the neighborhood. Your neighbors' remotes for their TV-VCR-Cable ... etc, and for their garage door openers! Any of them could be the culprit. Oh, and sometimes cordless phones can cross signals with remotes too.

Ok, since it happens repeatedly and sporadically - ie at different times of the day - it's probably not a preset timer. Most likely the poltergeist haunting your TV is from one of your neighbors using their remotes or cordless phones. Depending on the TV manufacturer, you may be able to change the frequency/channel setting of the remote for your TV set. Check through your user manual or look the manufacturer up on the net and see if they have a help page. P.S. Thanks for selecting my response! Cheers!

Hi ltmoon - It is very possible that other people in our apartment complex have remotes, etc that might be interferring with our own. I don't think it would have anything to do with the programming because it sometimes will come on again & again, immediately after I turn it back off & so often too. I will check it though to make sure. Thanks very much for all of your suggestions. I really appreciate it. Oh, and I have not been watching Poltergeist... LoL! ;)

Oh scary. I can imagine if I were on my own and the TV suddenly came on I would jump a mile. My BF had something similar happen to him. In the last house I rang him in Spain whilst I was in the UK and he said, the lights had suddenly gone on and then they went off. That happened a couple of times, even he got a little bit worried (won't use the word scared!) but I stayed on the line until it had stopped doing it. Quite soon after that we got the house rewired and it didn't happen again. There is a logic behind everything, so they say! Anyway, I think you probably have something similar in your TV. It would still scare me though!

Hi wickedangel - Yes, I think you are right with it probably being a wiring problem with our TV, just like it probably was with your house. I would really love to buy a new one but we can't right now due to finances. My husband will be graduating from dental school in June so hopefully we can get a nice new one before the year is out. Gosh... will it really be 2009 next year?! Yikes! Anyway, I would love to buy one of those big screen (not too huge though) plasma or HDTV's. Definitely a flat screen. It would be nice to mount it up on the wall like a theatre screen! Surround sound, etc. etc. etc! Ok, I know I'm dreaming... but hey... if we can't dream, what else do we have?! LoL

Yes, it will be 2009 next year, I can still remember when they were saying it will be 2000 next year! Eek where have the years gone. Good luck with it and perhaps if you know someone who can have a look at your TV in the mean time....????

I haven't had it happen with a television, but twice my computer has turned itself on in the middle of the night! Its in the room of which I sleep in, so I'm sure you can imagine my fright.

That is weird thoseappleslooknice! That would definitely freak me out having the computer come on all by itself. Are you sure you turned it off before going to bed? Did it wake you up when it came on? How long have you had it? I know, lots of questions (LoL)!

Do you have anything infrared in the house? I ask because I saw this episode of Ghost Hunters where they were investigating a room and the TV kept coming on. Come to find out their infrared thermometer was making the TV turn on.

Not that I know of sedel1027. Nothing infrared. We have also moved from Virginia to California since getting the TV. It has done it since we got it. We lived in an apartment complex in Virginia and another one here in CA. BTW, my 13 year old son loves watching shows like Ghost Hunters too!

I have never heard of this before relating to T.V other than from psychic friends of mine who assure me that one of the ways a poltegeist makes itself known is by such things. However, it might well be worth letting an Electriction look at it blessed be

My TV did that a couple times, but it was always because I had accidentally hit the sleep timer and it had then turned itself off. My sister used to do that at my parent's house, so I'd jump out of my skin every time the TV would shut itself off.

Funny you should mention this, koalatbs! I have owned two of them in the past that did the same thing. Several years ago I bought a TV from my nephew that was very nice. It did not take long, however before I noticed the TV would come on by itself at times. When I asked him if the TV ever did that when he owned it he replied that it had not. The situation finally got on my nerves so badly that I put it into the shop to try and find out what was wrong with it. There was nothing wrong. Eventually I sold it. A few years later I bought another TV(brand new), and I had no problems with it until I had it for about 10 years. Suddenly it started doing the same thing. We would be upstairs in bed and all of a sudden the TV would start blaring. I was already imagining the house I lived in at the time might be haunted. I suppose it was because when I moved out the TV never came on by itself again.

Yes my telly started doing this a couple of weeks ago i would turn the t.v off go to go upstairs to bed. I would get about half way up the stairs and the telly would come on. So had to go back down and turn it off. I think this is down to a fualty switch as my youngest son has a habit of turning the telly off over and over again. So i think he has damaged the switch. It only seems to happen last thing at night.

I can imagine that it is a bit freaky! Right, the only time that my tv has ever done this was a long time ago, when I was 18, which is 15 years ago now. I had a friend around, and we were just sitting talking, my friend commented that she was a baby medium, to which I just fell off my chair laughing. She insisted she was and so I said ok then lets do a ouija board and so we did, the glass moved round the board and I was convinced it was her and just got fed up of it and said that I was not doing it anymore because she was just playing with me. She said that we had to close it down properly and that I should not have just taken my hand away, but I would not as I just did not believe it. Anyway as she was trying to get me to close it down the tv switched itself on and then off again, I said it was her that she had done it with the remote, but the remote was over the other side of the room as I had not had the tv on since I had been out earlier. Then it did it again, but it stayed on this time, but there was no picture just snow, so I went over to switch it off and then I remembered, I had unplugged it before I went out, so I checked it and sure enough the plug was out of its socket!! I immediately went back over to that board and said close it down NOW, so we did. That has stayed with me over the years more than any memory, but you know I still do not believe in ghosts or anything!!!

LoL lateesha! I don't blame you. When our TV first started doing this it really freaked me out sometimes, especially when it would come on in the middle of the night and the sound would wake me from a deep sleep. I would tip toe out into the family room to see what the noise was and find the TV on full blast. I would think and question myself as to whether I had turned it off before going to bed and knew I had! Sometimes I thought maybe my son had come out in the middle of the night and was secretly watching TV without permission. But, we all eventually discovered that it was the TV itself that was turning itself on. Never turns itself off by itself, just on.

Yeah we have it hooked up to a surge protector. But I havent really turned it off havent turned it off when we leave.I should start since I heard it can save on electric since even a toaster being plugged in for example can still take some electric even though your not using it.The wierdest thing is when we have left for a night then come back the next day the tv is turned off.It only seem to do it when were home.

LoL Carrie26! It is kinda funny isn't it?! As I mentioned before though, please make sure you have it hooked up to a surge protector so you can turn it off completely at night & while you aren't home for safetys sake. Just in case it is a short or something like I believe ours is. Either that or just unplug it when you aren't using it.

By any chance, do you live in an apartment building? Remote controls work right through walls. It is possible your neighbor could be turning on your tv without meaning to. I have proven this to be true once when staying in a hotel. We believed that the people in the room next to us must have rolled over on the remote because the tv got slowly louder and louder and louder. When it didn't seem to wake them up we used our remote, pointed it at the wall where the sound was coming from and turned down their tv. True story!

Yes, that is freaky. Is it out of warranty? Please do not forget to power off at the base as that might not be safe. We have automatic fauc ets in the bathroom and some moisture got inside one of them so it was tuning itself on for no reason for a while. That was freaky, too. I would be sitting here at the computer and suddenly hear water running 3 rooms over. When I got there it would have stopped, but the bottom of the sink would be wet. I had to take it apart and clean the contacts and dry it out and stuff. Now it works fine. DO NOT do that with your TV, lol!

No, this is a new one on me. Our TV usually turns on via kid power. :-) I'd think you ought to take it in though just in case there's some kind of a problem that's dangerous. Not to mention the additional electricity you're using!

Ya, I know... we probably should take it to a repair shop or something. But, I think first I will keep my butt in my computer chair & just e-mail Magnavox to see what they might suggest! LoL Maybe they have had this problem reported before with this particular TV set. Who knows! BTW, hope all is well with you. I haven't been logging into yuwie much at all lately. How about you?

You're right, they could actually already have a fix for it, maybe even a recall. I'm on Yuwie a lot. Big payout after March numbers were posted, enough to buy lunch at Taco Bell. lol The money isn't maybe so hot unless you build a really respectable downline but I like a lot of the people I've met there!

Weird, but that sounds like you might live close to someone that might have a TV that works on the same frequency. It's sort of like a baby monitor's signal crossing with someone else's when they are on the same frequency. This can happen, especially if you live in an apartment building.

We do live in an apartment building, but we have moved several times and have actually had this same TV in 3 different apartments so far and it does the same thing no matter where we live. I know it is strange. I really think that it is a electrical problem with the TV itself. It has always done this since the time we received it as a christmas present from my mom. We have it hooked up to a surge supressor and just always try to remember to turn it off there. When we do that, it doesn't come on... thank goodness.

Well I think I found it again. It seemed I had a I.R. Remote extender plugged in that I thought was unplugged what it does is boost a remote signal from Room to Room I left the house and the TV would have been on bye now and it is still off. Some how the extender and I have seen the light on before got a signal from where who knows and turned my TV on I unplugged it. TV is still off as I have read remote signals can transmit from and threw rooms windows ETC. And as before if that's not it I will be back.... process of elimination from would could cause such a problem as I had.
