Does Microsoft Word have a word count function? And if so, where do I find it?

From the menu select [Tool] then [Word count...]. This include characters, lines, paragraph and pages.

Yes, this is exactly how Microsoft Word operates. You can also highlight a section of the text and use Word Count to check the number of words in that portion.
