What's wrong with rats?

Now, I would love to know why on earth every time I tell someone I have two pet rats they recoil in horror and simply state "But...why??" Honestly...they are intelligent, loving, well trained (well mine are anyway), sweet little pets. They have cute hammocks and everything. They don't smell, they're easy to look after and they know their names. (Roonil and Wazlib, extra points for anyone who knows the obscure reference!) I would much appreciate illumination regarding the matter of People vs Rats. Information is a tool! I can fight the corner for the rats! Hurrah!

Got the reference - loved the Harry Potter series - but bout the rats - can't help you out there. I don't dislike them, but I'm not exactly lining up to grab one as a pet - it's the tail...don't know why just creeps me out - but I think mice are cute - go figure.

I use to have a pet rat, her name was Dori, she even moved from Texas to PA. She was smart, I used to get her out of her cage all the time, the funny thing is that if I put her on the couch with me, that is where she would stay, she wouldn't even try to get off. How long did your's live? or how old are they? She lived to be around 3, and I was told they usually don't live very long, but then again I had a hamster that lived to be 9 years old.

Nine years' for a hamster? Good god, what did you feed it on? Life essence, taken from the blood of unicorns? I'm impressed! My two are just coming up to a year, and seem very healthy! I put vitamin drops in their water and they eat lots of fresh food and love coming out of their cage to play. They're potty trained and know not to bite or nibble anything! BTW was Dori from Finding Nemo? Love that character! Would you have rats again? What pets do you have now?
