How much corn to fill a gas tank?

I heard "one-third of the (U.S.) domestic corn harvest goes to fuel production".. Then others say no, it's only corn by products which are being used.. I guess the question is what is the land being used to grow? and for which purpose? food or fuel? What do you think? Is corn for fuel causing more trouble than its solving?
