trolleys! He was telling me about working on the railroad when he was young, how hard it was and the long hours, being on call 24/7/365 and how he quit because he hated being away from home. The stories he told me about how the trains made cities so prosperous and moved things around at such an economical cost made me wonder why they tore up so many tracks here in the U.S. Apparently, gas was cheap and big trucks could haul the goods. They tore up the train tracks and left the railings to rust, didn't even sell or recycle them. Now gas is outrageously expensive and we could really use the trains for transporting goods as well as people. Dad was telling me how his city laid track for an electric trolley and everyone used it because of the convenience--you didn't need to find a parking space, just walk to the trolley and get on! I wish they hadn't torn up those tracks, we could really use those trains now as passenger transport and commercial transport. My dad is 85 so that was a long time ago. Sometimes old ways are the best. I wish we had kept more of the train tracks, not destroyed them. The cost of food and other goods right now are through the roof because of gas prices. Truckers could be railroaders, so no jobs would be lost. Sometimes I think that "progress" is anything but good.
