Feeding Time Again!!!!

Ok my question to you is do you give your dog or puppy table scraps in addition to the food that the puppy or dog gets regularly? I'm not talking here and there. I'm talking after every meal. Today my kids had scrambled eggs and my one daughter had some left overs. So I decided to give my puppers a treat of some scrambled egg. He loved it but I don't do it often so that he doesn't expect to get it all the time. LOL!!!Plus I don't want him to become overweight. LOL!! So what do you do ? Do you give your dog the table scraps or not?

if i have meat scraps after meals.. he gets them instead of his usual nighttime doggie treat when he comes inside for the night. he loves it when we have steak and chicken! with the steak he gets the bones and leftovers.. with the chicken he gets a bunch of meat and chicken fat heated and mixed in with dryfood for his dinner that night. hes a spoiled rotten little hound!!

I only give my dog table scraps just once in awhile, I'll give it to him as a treat. He stays outside, but he grew up in the house, he's housetrained, and sometimes we'll let him come in and hang out for a little while, then we'll put him back out, and when he does come in thats when I'll give him something from the table, but only as a treat. I don't think you should give animals too many scraps because they will get used to it and won't eat their dog food, and it will make them fat, and some things are good for dogs.

Yeah I don't am very picky what I give my puppy but I will say this that he doesn't get it all the time it's strictly treat purposes and he is an inside puppy.. Go figure, he spoiled.

hello, we've got our dog back in china and he is used to having human food, i cooked his own meal and sometimes he have what is left from the table but not much coz i try to cook enough for just the two of us. he ate this for almost 3 years and now that we are living here in US he is half and half (dog food and table food) we dont see him getting over weight coz i try to watch out how much he is eating so far he is lean and healthy. the only dog food he likes is iams and he is very picky with food as well, i dont know where gets that personality LOL but he will eat his food so slow and almost like a king haha! anyway, i honestly fee l that as long as the table scraps are healthy ones an dnot just grease and fats then it is ok and just watch out how much you are feeding him. btw, he rarely eat his dog food and only eats it if i dont give him anything and he knows if he is not getting any table foods so he feeds himself before bed 2 cups of dog food (iams) last him for 3 days or so. hope i answer your question right takecare!

There is no wrong answer here. It's all about what you do.. I don't feed him scraps often and the scrap are like I said scrambled eggs. LOL!! But I have given him some meat and chicken. But Never fat. I don't like that it's not healthy for us why would it be healthy for him is my rule of thumb. LOL!! So he gets a treat once in a while. LOL!! Not always he's mainly a puppy food type of puppy.

thanks for the consideration that there is no wrong answer here LOL im glad to know that you treat your dog like the way you will treat yourself for food some just feed them whatever is left without thinking if that is healthy or not. i think it saves more (money wise) if the dog is used to eating dog food (specially big dogs LOL) thanks for the reply and have a great day. takecare!

No I never give my dog tabel scraps as My mum used to do that all the time with her dog and it became so overweight just from the amount of bits here and there that I cannot see my dogs becoming like that! I heard but not sure if true that eggs are good for dogs so maybe occasionally this would be alright but i'm not 100% sure....

From what I understand it makes there coat shiny. So I have no problem with an occasional egg for the puppers.

There are two schools of thought on the subject. One says that table scraps are the major cause of obesity and health hazzards to pets. The other is that commercial foods are BAD. If you buy good name brand foods or read the label you can make wise choices but if on the other hand you have a pet with allergy issues usually stemming from additive such as food coloring then eating from the family table might be the better option. Moderation and exercise will keep your pet at a healthy weight. An additional caution (personal experience) dogs who chew wood and ingest it will very possibably have a weight problem. Labs are notorious for eating wood which for some reason causes weight gain. My daughters dog ate wooden toys when left home alone and no matter what the didn't feed as food she was FAT. The vet told her that unless there were hard splinter in her stomach the weight gain was the only hazzard and that limiting her caloric intake would help but cutting of her wood intake was what he was prescribing.

NOOO NEVER NEVER do I give them table scraps IN FACT they arent even allowed in the dining room while we are eating....They have been given Prime Rib scraps compliments of our neighbour a couple times since we moved here (almost 5 rys) but thats it...I just dont care for any of our pets to get human food like that for a few reasons...Key one being safety and another being the whole begging thing...that drives me NUTS..i cant stand when a dog begs while someone is eating..

My dogs usually get whatever dinner scraps are left over. They think it's just the greatest thing too. But of course mine are extra spoiled because we mix whatever cream soup we have on hand with their dry dog food and then it gets heated up. So I guess you could say they get a 2 course meal every night. LOL

We have 4, 4 legged babies and they may get something that falls on the floor accidentally or an apple here and there. Yet, working for a vet for 2 years made me see way too many scary animals that were fed table scraps. If it is anything more than meat and rice or a vegetable their systems will not react well. It may take time, but eventually they will suffer. Sorry, I know it is hard but I would refrain. I agree though I hate begging pooches at the table. Drives me crazy too.

My dogs have roast dinner on the weekend with us, and I cook them fresh veggies, twice a week, I add aything to there diet that is good for them. Not choc, sweets, cakes and all nasties they cannot digest. They do not beg but they give there paw when they recieve there meal! That I translate as a thank you!

Yes,I do. Our dog is a moocher and I'm guilty of giving him tidbits. He whines and he sounds like he's talking to you to get something to eat. After supper if he hasn't finished eating his own food, he finally goes and eats it because he knows we're all finished and he's probably not getting any more treats for the night.

I have started to put my puppers out at dinner time once the food is done and on the table he goes out and doesn't come in until we are down eating. I do this most of the time.. That way he sees that he can't beg and that he isn't getting feed from the table. Plus I don't always give him table food. LOL!!

I will give scraps, if I know it's stuff that's healthy for my dog. Be very careful, as many of our foods can be toxic and even have cumulative toxic effects on dogs and cats (like onions & garlic damages hemoglobin, can give strokes, etc.) -even grapes/raisins cause kidney failure, so you never know! I think eggs are fine. All I know is that my pets are super spoiled and as long as it's good for them, I'll give to them.

We have a Pekingese and we have had him for about 7 years, he is the ruler of the house, we have always give him some of what ever we was eating, he has had milk since he was a baby, my hubby gave him pork chop bones, big ones not small bones and a few weeks back he got sick till I thought he was going to die, his stool was solid blood, and black like chocolate syrup, the smell was horrible, and I couldn't get one spot cleaned before he done it again. When we got him to the Vet, he said it was the table scraps that was eating his stomach up, he said pork is the worst thing you can give a dog. He said small bits of chicken is good for him, but no bones or pork of any kind. I do give him a egg once in a while it is good for his coat and it is full of protein. No milk, so I am just telling you what the vet told us, he is having a time now waiting by us to get something of what we eat. And it hard not to give it to him, but it would be like losing a child if something happen to him. You need also he said to find a good dog food that is mainly chicken. This stuff mine eats is not too good but refuses to eat anything else, so he said as long as it wasn't making him sick it was ok. What happen to the dogs that we had when we was a kid, our parents cleared the table at night and whatever was left they threw it out to the dogs, not anymore they can't eat it, funny how dogs have changed.

I don't think the dogs changed I think it was our knowledge of what is healthy for them or not. LOL!! My puppers is spoiled but not in the way of eating table food. I hate begging animals so he goes outside when we eat. LOL!!!

It's a very very rare occasion that my dogs get table scraps because like you, I don't want them to get fat or to get used to it. They all know to leave the room when we're at the table eating, we've trained them to do that.

My school of thought on this subject is that if you NEVER feed them directly from the table, they will NEVER beg. I don't like beggars, hate it, in fact, so I do give my dog all the table scraps, bones and all AFTER clearing the table of everything. And she would be scolded if she ever begged and not get anything that night at all. I would just give it to her tomorrrow so she forgot. She is 9 yrs old, so well trained a long time ago when she was a puppy, by me. I have found her a very smart and obedient dog.

Sad to say we dont have dogs at home. I know my kids wants to but my wife doesnt like dogs. She had fears of dogs. Personally I like dogs but I think we could not afford to buy dog food already, If ever we would have dogs at home, they will eat our left overs only.

first of all, the vetarians said that the dog foods are actually best for them and that contains everything they need nutritionally. I feed my dog with that mainly, but i occasionally give him some of my left overs as treats. He likes human food obviously, because they are more tasty than his own, but pls also remember that the food we are eating are not entirely good for your dogs, because they are usually high in salt, preservatives and oil, which are not good for the dogs. (but the dog foods really doesnt taste anything, it might smell good but definitely blank) since you will only give occasionally, the dogs wont have the problem of being overweight, dont you worry. BTW,my dog loves pizza...
