Stars by our handles.

Ok folks, help me out on this one. I am a little confused. Confusion is nothing new in my life, but I think you can answer this for me...
I have noticed a star by my handle and the handle of others with a number in it. Mine has an 8 in it. other have a 9. I saw one with a 4. What do these stars and numbers represent. I think the number in parentheses is the total number of posts I have made, but I have no clue what the stars and numbers in them are for. any help on this???

Those little stars are your mylot reputation!The higher the star the higher your reputation...10 is the highest number...

well I see you are an 8...and I am an 8...so we must be doing pretty good if 10 is as high as you can go. How do you get your number higher?
and was I accurate in my assumption that the number of parentheses is the number of posts we have made?
