I just chatted with a online friend Jerry. He is from the States. He is an ex-Mormon,he joked that the worst part of hell is reserved for ex-Mormons like him. He told me he was engaged to a nice Mormon girl when he was twenty-two. But then things started going kind of crazy where he lived. There was a local uprising. He lived in a remote desert town, with very old-school Mormons. Some were polygamists. One of them wanted his fiancee. Finally,he got beaten up, and his fiancee was forced to marry the cult leader. He told me Mormons got harassed by outsiders because of this. So finally the Church decided to change the rules around 1890. But some people refused to change. So there are still polygamous Mormons around although they aren't part of the mainstream Church any more, but some have formed smaller cults, and they say they are the only true Mormons left. "You know what?"Jerry says,"Back in 19th century pioneer days, Mormons were told they would go to heaven if they were polygamous. Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church, had over forty wives." What a history! It sounds like the Wild West.

Polygamy exists in more than just the Morman religion. I have friends in a couple areas of the states who have a wife and one or two girlfriends living in the same house. Now they are not actually married to them all legally but they feel that they are all a family. These people are not religious at all, although they consider themselves spiritual. Personally I couldn't share my hubby and my hubby says I am enough to handle without adding any more. We would not choose this lifestyle for ourselves but if someone chooses this for themselves and all parties are consenting adults. I don't have a problem with it.

Wow,that sounds crazy!Personally it's hard for me to accept that.several women share one man? That only happened in the old emperor's age.How could those women deal with that? They are not jealous?

I like that attitude Jinx. It's their life, and their choosing, so let them be. They aren't hurting anyone else, and they are happy in their life style. I personally couldn't live that way, but wouldn't tell someone else not to if that's what they want.

yes there is still cults that have more than one wife, it has passed on tv, in documentaries and even oprah winfrey did a show and they just removed 400 children from a compound in texas because they suspected polygamy and incest.

That is like a cheap way to justify a his want to have all the women that he can have... polygamy exist in a lot of cultures... but have that many wives is preposterous... how can he even remember all their names or all his children's names... there is nothing in the Bible that says a man should have more wives that he can handle...

oh man that must be something for men there.who wouldn't want around 40 wives one for each day.even in our history we had many kings and rulers who had over 35 wives and they lived in the same palace.but most of these marriages were based on their alliances for more kingdoms.on my recent visit to a palace i heard my brother making a remark that one queen for a day that must be exciting for a king.and i couldnt agree less.

Fortunately, I don't know any pologamist nor mormans for that matter. I do know that they still exist here though. Just a few weeks ago there was news of one of those smaller cults being raided. I think it had about 400 or so members to it.

It seems like Joseph Smith founded the religion with such beliefs precisely so he could accumulate all the women he wanted and live that kind of lifestyle. Sounds self-serving to me.

I do not see anything wrong with wanting to be or being polygamous. I do see something wrong with forcing women to marry and marrying underage women. It is none of my business what other people do, but when it comes to these cults it is no longer based on religion, but rather one man's (or a few mens') sick desires and brainwashing. I know there are a lot of people out there who are in a relationship with more than one consenting adult, so what's the problem there? I see nothing wrong.

Polygamy has existed for hundreds of years and will continue to exist. Generally only the first marriage is the legal one though on occasion that one will be a "civil" ceremony and one of the others will be the "legal" marriage. I have known many polygamists over the years. It is an underground life so to speak. I personally feel it is wrong. Simply a way for a man to "have his cake and eat it too" by having a wife and mistres(ess) in order to satisfy his carnal desires. Though they claim it is to get into heaven, there is nowhere in the Bible that states polygamy is the only way to heaven!

I think many marriages exist in a polygamous atmosphere. For example a man and his wife may be ok with the other having someone on the side. The Rastafarians like Bob Marley were big on this and he for one had both women living under the same roof at one time. I dont know which woman in her right mind is ok with this but they are out there. When it comes to this existing in a religion it is mainly based on the greed of the leader or main leaders of that movement who do not want torelinquish their hold on leadership but want to have several women at the same time. They use their power of authority and influence to make this behaviour a part of their movement. How many polygamous relationships does anyone know where the woman is allowed to have as many men as she wants to. Very little. The men however feel its their rights to have as many women as they want and they should not be questions. My opinion on the matter. Hold on to your (not you in particular just people on a whole) God given right to decide right from wrong and to rationalize things for yourself. Never give these up for anyone's idealogies as those idealogies many times are meant to please that person. Polygamy is wrong just as cheating on your partner is wrong. I would never allow anyone to make me stoop and accept such pratices as a norm of life. (lol)

You know there is a show on tv about a family that live like this - it is fictional of course but it must be based on reality. I think it's ridiculous myself, but each to their own I guess.
