Let it all out or else, warns doctor

A French doctor has written a book in which he advises his countrymen to be less polite and let out the wind when necessary. According to Dr. Frederic Saldmann, not burping can cause hiatal hernia and lead to acid reflux which can cause esophageal cancer. He also believes that farting is natural and much better for you than trying to hold it all in. Do you think society is too hung up on bodily functions and should be more accepting of burps and farts, or do you find it so distasteful that you yourself suppress your natural gas?

If I'm not mistaken, in some cultures, burping while at the dinner table, weather at home or at a restaurant or even as a guest at someones home, is taken as a compliment to the cook... Farting on the other hand, I haven't heard anything about that... But anyways, I try not to hold in the gas, which ever form it may be, farting or burping... In private, of course always let it out... In public, well, I have let go of few but I try to do it quietly & try to find a windy place to do it in... lol...

Yes, I have heard that too, and it makes sense in a way. If you feel full then the cook has satisfied your hunger and a burp would indicate that. I certainly don't recommend that everyone goes around making a big show of things, but maybe if we put less emphasis on it, fewer people would notice anyway.

I did not realize that it is possible to keep from burping or farting when the body wants to! I do think we are too hung up on natural body functions and all that! What are we doing to ourselves, just to be accepted by fellow human beings?

I know people who would rather die than to do either in public. I simply don't think it's good for you and maybe being a little more relaxed about it would be healthier for everyone.

Yes, it is unhealthy to hold it in like that!
