As the previous responders have said the only way to protect your computer against virus infection is to install an anti virus program. It is also imperative the you update the virus definitions on a regular basis. otherwise the program will soon become of little value.

Be discreet with web sites that you visit. Don't open mail from whom you don't know and always check external or removable drive before browsing or running it. Knowing what sort of file like "*.exe, *.ini or *.vbs" where virus could come from is a big plus. This is sort of "know the enemy". One last thing, Don't ignore error messages, read them and be conspicuous.
