got this the other day in an email and I just thought it would be good to pass on so we can check it out for our selves (Quote) Subject: Gas Rip-Offs I am sending this story on because I am certain it happened to me. I had allowed my car to go to totally empty by the time I drove into a Four Brothers station here in Wilkesboro on 4/26, then filled it up. I have a 20 gallon capacity tank, usually takes only 18, and my receipt showed 23 gallons when I stopped the fill up at $75. This is a true story, so read it carefully. On April 24, 2008, I stopped at a Kangaroo BP gas station, located at 1325 Main Street, Cartersville, GA. My truck's gas gauge was on 1/4 of a tank. I use the mid-grade, which was priced at $3.71 per gallon. When my tank is at this point, it takes somewhere around 14 gallon's to fill it up. When the pump showed 14 gallons had been pumped I began to slow it down, then to my surprise it went to 15, then 16. I even looked under my truck to see if it was being spilled. It was not. Then it showed 17 gallons had been pumped. It stopped at almost 18 gallons. This was very strange to me, since my truck has only an 18 gallon tank. I went on my way a little confused, then on the evening news I heard a report that 1 out of 4 gas stations had calibrated their pumps to show more gas had been pumped than a person actually got. Here is how to check a pump to see if you are getting the right amount: Whichever grade you are using, put EXACTLY 10 GALLONS in your tank, then look at the dollar amount, if the dollar amount is not EXACTLY 10 times the price of the fuel you have chosen, then the pumps are rigged. In my case as I said the mid-grade was $3.71 9/10 per gallon, (gas prices can differ in different states and as they go up all the time you have to check real careful) my dollar amount for 10 gallons should have been $37.19. If I had only check the pump. It doesn't matter where you pump gas, please check the 10 gallon price. If you do find a station that is cheating, contact the Georgia Agriculture Department, and direct your comments to Tommy Irvin, Commissioner. In other states contact proper authorities. Please don't delete this until you have sent it to all people in your address book. We need to put a stop to this outrageous cheating of customers. The gas companies are making enough profits at honest rates. Says here honest rates I dont beleive we have honest rates any more! as the price rasing up all the time its a shame that we have to put up with this Gevernment should put a freeze and lower the price whgat do you think? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Call 1.888.FC DIRECT (1.888.323.4732) or visit us on the web at firstcitizens.com today to take advantage of our great products and services.

Thanks for sharing this information. I will pass it on. I would like to have the freeze of price at $2.50 or less. It is horrible that my last purchase of gasoline was a $3.99. There is no excuse for the gasoline stations manipulating the pumps or adding things to the gas to get more money and there is no excuse for the oil companies charging more money for their oil and no excuse for the speculation either.

your welcome . went to put gas in yesterday and as we rounded the corner I saw the price jump from one price to $3.90 went back to the gas station on the other corner and got it for $3.71. It is awful and I have even seen gas stationa across the street from pne anpther have 10 cents difference in the price

That sure indicates that there is some price warring going on. It would be great if they would all try to get back to closer to $2.50.

How about just taking the gas can for the lawn mower down and pumping in a gallon? That would work too wouldn't it and easier to figure out without a calculator. Years ago my father in law told me he got a gallon of gas and put it in a jug and put it in the freezer. The water in it freezes, the gas don't. From what he said there was a good amount of water in it. We need to get away from dependence on oil. Some people were saying this over 20 years ago. Get a way around having to buy oil and let the oil companies go down. I spend about $80 a week on gas to get to work and back and no I can't afford it. Also when you apply for food stamps the gas money you spend is not counted against your income. This is wrong. That money would buy a lot of groceries.

YEs a gallon can would work just as well. of course the water froze . yes I think that if any one is on food stamp that they need to compensate for the price of gas that would buy alot od groceries

Thank you Lakota. This is very good advice. I never tank more than 10 gallons at the time. I don't know why, but I feel like I am saving money when I don't spend too much. In reality, I am loosing money, because gas prices are up everyday. I will use your advice next time when pumping.

Yes, most definitely report this type of thing. Each state sends people around periodically to check the callibration on the pumps, but that doesnt' keep the owners/operators from changing them between visits.

What a rip off!!! Can you get your money back? Things are getting hard enough with all the price increase in groceries, etc caused by the high cost of gas. Now we have to face getting ripped off at the gas stations! Thank for posting this important piece of information.
