Hello. i have been told by alot of people that drinking cold water makes one gain weight. To put some truth to this, my cousin just emailed a month ago that when she stopped drinking cold water, she lost 10 pounds in just 2 weeks. my dad is always telling me that drinking cold water very early in the morning is not healthy. is just that i feel warm always and during the summer season, i feel like my throat is always parch and that only cold water can quench thirst... what is your opinion? is there a scientific explanation/basis for this theory?

Cold water does NOT make you gain weight. In fact, it is the absolute opposite. Cold water can help you to lose weight. As water contains no calories, it is physically impossible that it can make you gain weight. Ice-cold water stimulates the body's metabolism. As the water is cold, the body has to work (and therefore use calories) to warm it up as it is processed within the body. In the summer it is very important to drink plenty of water to ensure you don't become dehydrated. I can see why your dad might say it is not a good idea to drink ice-cold water first thing in the morning, but this would be because it would be a bit of a shock to the system. In the morning, you would be better to drink warm water with some lemon, to help clean your system.

I can just about make myself drink warm water with lemon on a morning, but it does taste a bit disgusting. Throughout the day though, I always drink cold water. If it's gone warm from sitting out too long, I have a fresh glass. I always aim to drink about 2 litres a day, 3 in the summer.

Water, whether cold or warm, will not make you fat. Water contains no calories, so it can't add to your weight. Your body needs to drink at least 8, 8 oz. glasses a day. I have always heard that drinking ice cold water will actually help you loose weight, as it speeds up your metabolism to warm the body back up. But, as I said before, water in any form will not make you gain weight.

I think I shall have to disagree with this comment. I drink lots of cold water and I am a UK size 10. Water is good for you, it cleans the body out. I am always getting my children to drink water as it helps to keep the body clean. They are not fat either. I think you should just carry on drinking cold water if you like to drink it, it is the first time that i have ever heard that drinking cold water can make you fat. Do you think she was playing a joke on you via the e mail?

Hi i have read that drinking water would really help in losing weight but if you're worried of bloating, it would be better to take luke-warm water... for cold water makes you bloat.. hope this will help... :)

I'm not sure, but I've heard that cold water burns less calories/fat. But that doesn't really sound convincing, does it? We don't even know if hot, lukewarm or cold water matters in terms of burnign fats. I guess,to be safe, just drink enough of each to balance it out. I still think the best way to trim down is a balance between exercise and the right diet. However, I do think drinking cold water first thing in the morning isn't a good idea--it's kind of a shock to the system.

water has nocalories so how could you gain or lose weight by drinking it or not drinking it. you will die if you do not consume enough water each day. food has calories'and calories if not burned up by your body will be stored as fat not water. cold water is needed to quench ones thirst. if 'someone lost weight because she stopped drinking cold water its only because she exercised enough to use up the calories in her food and not because of water, hot cold or medium.

I think that there are some people who believe that the cold water is shocking to the system and who believe too that one should drink some warm water first thing in the morning to encourage bowel movements. I reside in a place where most of the time water is served iced. I like water the colder the better and I think that it does not cause weight gain. It is, I think, a cultural thing or something based on traditional medicine that states that warm water is better.

The only logical thing I have heard about that is that your body has to use energy to heat your body back up to normal temperature rather than burning fat, but I doubt that would take much energy especially during the summer months. If you stop drinking water then you will loose water weight, but as soon as you start drinking liquids this weight will go back on, so it is pointless. I also heard that drinking water helps your body run more efficiently and speeds up your metabolism so your burn fat quicker.
