What Dog is best as a pet?

My husband and I are considering getting a dog in the near future. We want one that is family and child friendly, reliable, truthworthy, not a lot of maintenance, mid sized or smaller, does not shed uncontrollably, and easy to clean and look after! Which dogs are best? I personally love pugs, but my husband thinks that type of dog is too girly and I've heard they are high maintenance. What dog do you have or what pets would you recommend? Do you breed dogs or know any breeders out here in Southern California? Also, what are the going rates on dogs these days?

Ok, first off, forget breeders & such, they're too expensive (you can usually 'start' in the high hundreds for pedigrees) & there are SO MANY dogs out there that need new homes for whatever reason. Second, most people know that mongrels make better pets :) Pug's are ok but they're a bit of work - especially with their eyes & the problems that they can have with them. Try going to your local pound or whatever you have there - have a look & see what they have, anything labradore crossed would be a good start, don't go too small as they can be snappy, avoid anything that has a lot of energy (unless you have the time for major daily exercise), Labradoodles are excellent dogs, as are things like cockerspaniels, dalmations, german shepherds, depending on how big you want to go. Try & pick something with a quiet temperament & most shelters allow you to spend time with the dogs & your kids as well so you'll know how they cope with people & kids. I hope this helps you some but definitely try all the homeless dog shelters first, they need homes too & many are just there due to people not wanting them or not being able to take care of them, it doesn't mean there's actually anything wrong with them!
