What's the story behind "Killing me softly"?

For those who remember Roberta Flack's hit "Killing me softly with his song": I just listened to it on my way back home on the bus. I know the lyrics by heart, my Dad used to have the album so I sing it since I'm 3. She says that the new singer in town is (kindo) using her letters to make songs. She has never seen him before, but the words, the situations etc in the songs are "killing her softly". My theory is, that the song describes how much we can identify with a song. What you guys think about it?

I'm not sure how much truth there is in this, but at the time the song was around, the rumour was that it was about Don McLean.

Back in 1972, he did American Pie and Vincent. In the UK, American Pie I think got to no.4 in about April of that year, and later in July-ish, Vincent I think got to no.2 in the UK singles charts.

I agree with you. I think that she was feeling exactly what the singer was singing about, as if he had read her private thoughts. I've always loved that song, too.
