What is the difference between chowder and soup?

I know chowder is cream based, and thick- soup is usually made with a broth and much thinner the next thing would be stew which is very thick. But apart from that ???

I dont think there is any differnece other than that. i wouldn't know what it would be. Any real chefs here might be able to tell you but I think you hit the nail on the head. I love both of them. They are delicious.

I have seen the namw Chowder used a lot on TV on shows like Seinfeld and such, we don't tend to used this in Australia much but when I hear them say that I always think of seafood for some reason, so I don't know if it is a term used to describe seafood soup or if it is for other things as well, I would be interested to know exactly what it is ...
