Judging a book by the cover.

I am a voracious reader and spend way too much time either at the library or Barnes and Noble. I have a pretty small list of genres and authors that I stick to, but every now and again, a book cover will catch my attention, yet I am loathe to read it simply because the cover looks cool. How many of you have bought a book based solely on the cover and did it turn out to be good or awful? Please also list the book if you can remember...thanks.

No, I never bought a book because I liked the cover. Sorry. It's a good question and I wish I had done it and remembered the name of the book. Rats. I don't buy new books often, they're too expensive. If I buy a new book, the font has to be the right size, I have to like the the book smells and how it feels in my hands. I never read a book with less than 500 words and I prefer more. I've picked up a book because I like the cover, but if I don't like the summary on the back cover, back it goes to the shelf. Uh-oh. I think I went off topic, but I really don't want to delete my response and lose all my words! Thanks for your understanding.

it's fine....LOL. Thanks for the response. It's only the cost of books that really stop me from buying based solely on the cover.

I also have the habit to judge the books from there covers, like the first time I saw CHICKENSOOP I thought that it will be boring but it turned out pretty interesting.

I have done it too many times to enumerate and it was never a happy event. Wouldn't you think that 12 years of working in and managing bookshops, which included the buying, would have cured me of this? Alas, it was not to be. Stick to whom and what you know mate.

The book cover is one of the considerations when I decide whether to pick up a book or not. But that would not be the ONLY factor. So normally, I will flip to the synopsis or glance over the pages to see if I am keen. Cheers!

not so much anymore,i usually thumb through it a bit to see if i want it.books have gotten too expensive to buy just on cover. i think the last impulse buy was "the power of myth" it had a chinese dragon on the front that was pretty cool.turned out to be an alright book, but kind of thin on the content.

A book with a special cover could attract me eyes but it can't change the content. I will pick the book with better cover first and read. If the book's content is not good, I will not buy it.

Heloo, inked. Yes I often buy (or check out from the library) books based on the cover. I think a cover can draw your attention to a book you would normally not notice based on the title. I don't know what genres you like to read, but here are 2 books I bought because I was drawn to the covers: One Mississippi (Mark Childress) Hula (Lisa Shea)

Hi inked4life! I read a lot too but that was before I had the internet! haha..However, when I buy books, I usually read the introduction and the short summary at the back cover and also the reviews. And then I scan a few pages first. haha.. Take Care and God Bless! Celebrate life!

I am very guilty of this, although I do try not to be. In my case it's normally the other way around though. I look at the cover and quite often it puts me right off. Sometimes when a book was written some time ago it will have been in a number of different covers over the years. The old ones often put me off, which is stupid as a good book will always withstand the passing of the years. Quite recently I was sent a mystery novel which had a dreadful, dreadful cover. It was a black cover with an apple and a skull on, and looked for all the world like some tacky pulp horror. Despite the recommendation, it sat and sat on my bookshelf for ages until I could face picking it up. You've guessed it, when I did read it I discovered that it was just as good as I'd been promised. Sorry, can't remember the name or the author. I'm really bad for that! I'll also avoid anything that looks like it might be fantasy or sci-fi. So dragons, chrome and galaxies on the cover will also make me pass something by.

Hi, for me, I'll not judge the book by its cover and use that as the criteria to buy a book. I prefer to read the foreword and sysnopsis of the book before I decide to buy the book.

I think a book must never be judged by its cover...and we must choose a book according to its contents.
