What is the role of the Best Man? I heard once that they are suposed to take care of the wife in the event that anything happens to the husband. Is this true?

I hope not or I'm going to be stuck with my husband's brother and I don't think his wife is going to like it any more than I will.

LOL, yep I agree that whole tradition may have been true years ago and maybe still in 'arranged marriages' where there is an agreement made between the families of the bride and groom, from one reason or another. But more or less in today's society the best man's role is to witness and support the groom through the 'ordeal'

It may have been the tradition for some people centuries ago, same as the brother of the husband was supposed to marry or at least take care of the wife, lol. However, nowadays it's not true anymore. The role of the best man in today's wedding tradition is foremost to be a witness to the ceremony. The best man and maid/matron of honor sign the wedding certificate as witnesses. The best man also stands up for the husband to be. Emotional support so to speak. He is also supposed to organize the bachelor party and help with the wedding preparations as far as the groom is involved. Mostly he has to see that the groom is there on time and dressed correctly, lol. He also has to hold a speech at the reception to praise the couple and wish them the best. Other obligations can be added depending on wedding traditions. For example, where I got married it is also traditional to have a "Dollar Dance." Where people line up and pay a dollar or more for the privilege to dance with the bride or groom. My husband's best man organized that by getting the people to the dance floor and timing how long they get to dance with us. The money is supposed to help you start your marriage, lol.
