http://amoralpolitics.blogspot.com/2008/05/cluster-bomb-cluster-fck.html Anyone else think that this cluster bomb ban treaty is a joke? I mean all the countries that have the bombs refused to sign the treaty and are thus not bound by it. Its a little silly in my opinion.

Well if no one signed it, it does sound a little silly now doesn't it? Maybe the writers of it just like to look busy!

Well 111 countries signed it, but the thing is the countries that did not sign are the ones who use it. So basically the countries who might be targeted for clusterbombing were all for it.

The fact that so many other countries DID sign it, is a great thing. It's an act of peace to some extent. Before this treaty, there were what? A few hundred countries that COULD have used the cluster bombs, and now, there are not even 10. Any idea what the consequences are to those countries that sign the treaty but renege?

its irrelevant, the only countries that HAVE cluster bombs to use, or are even developing them didn't sign the treaty. A treaty like this has no teeth. Everyone that signed it have no program to get cluster bombs let alone have a viable delivery system.

I understand your point, however, my point is that having some sign the treaty is better than having none sign it.

Oh come on now... you know all too well, that when there's a will, there's a way. If the countries that signed wanted access to cluster bombs, they could get it. The fact that they're signing is good... it means they aren't going to take that route. (of course, that just leaves them open to all sorts of other attack and defense choices... but that is not the purpose of this discussion).
