I would say that this is very possible. While he is trying to make it sound like he is doing the church a favor by quitting so he does not draw more fire to the church, I believe it to be the other way around. He is quitting the church because that church is making him look bad, so he is kicking them to the curb before the church says something else stupid that could damage him.
