Do you wear something new right away?

When you buy new things for yourself, do you wear them right away? Do you insist that they be washed first? I usually will wear something the day after buying it, but my boyfriend heard that they use formaldehyde to preserve clothing and will not wear them until they have gone through the laundry. I don't know how true that statement is, I had never heard it before. Are you anxious to wear new clothing or to wear it when you get around to it?

I like to wash clothes that are new before I wear them. I do not like how they smell. And yes when things are imported from other countries they are sprayed with all kinds of things. That's because of the wood pallets the things are transported on. The country that is receiving the goods will insist that it is sprayed before entering the country so they don't get the wood eating bugs. That's just one thing. There are a lot more pests that they spray for.

I didn't know that, but I guess it makes perfect sense.

I used to like wearing my clothes as soon as I got home, to model them I guess, but with my kids I always wash them first...in light of aplaza's post, I think I will do the same for me as well!

Actually there was quite a big brouhaha about this very topic here in Holland a few months ago. A lot of stuff for Europe comes in through the seaport at Rotterdam. I think there is a difference between trying it on, doing a quick modelling session when you get home and actually wearing something close to your skin for a couple of hours. If it were really toxic they wouldn't be allowed to sell it would they? On the other hand it's never a bad idea to be careful about these things and wash the clothes before really wearing them.

Before I used to wear new tshirts or pants before sending them to the laundry. But later on I also learn that its best and safe that those are being washed first before wearing. So this time I see to it that new clothes are washed already before wearing it.

I don't like washing them first, because I like the feel of the newness of them. Once they are washed they don't feel as new anymore.

I've never heard that about clothing...I tend to wear new clothes the day or so after I get it as well. But sheets are something else....have you ever noticed that when you buy new sheets it says to wash before using them...so I guess they do add formaldehyde to them too, or at least some weird chemical

I must say that it depends on the garment. If it is going to be worn against the skin and not on top of other garments then I would for sure want to make sure that I wash it first before wearing it. Your boyfriend is right... there are preservatives like formaldehyde and other chemicals as well that are put on clothing to retard wrinkles, bad oders, etc. In addition, if you tried on the clothing you can bet that several other people have tried it on too and not all of them may have been clean... Do you really want to wear clothing that someone who may have had lice or other problems has tried on without washing it? I must admit that I don't at all want to wear such clothing if it is a nightgown, bra, undies, socks, but I have done so for pants and tops which were worn on top of the under garments that I was wearing. if the clothing appears like there would be a possibility that it would not look as good if I washed it. It is safer to wash the clothing than not to do so...

I wash my new clothes befor wearing them for this is always how I've been. They look just as new when they are washed. I can't say that I heard of what your boyfriend is talking about this is the first time hearing of it so I don't know if it is true or not. I don't buy many new clothes often for myself the last time I did was 8 months ago and they got washed first befor I started wearing them.

I should be embarrassed to admit this but I almost never wash new clothes before wearing them! I love the smell of new clothes and the feel of them when they are brand new so I can never resist wearing them before washing them! I know it probably is a bad idea to wear them before washing them because they have chemicals in the dyes and I've heard of the formaldehyde being on the clothes as well but I'm not 100% sure if thats true as I havent read up on it or anything!

I always have to wash something before I wear it, even if it is something that has not been removed from it's package. I am a bit of a germ freak so I like everything to be as clean as it can before I will use or wear it.

I HAVE to wash it first. I think about the factory it was made in being dusty, dirty, no telling. The other day I had to buy a shirt in the middle of the day because the one I had on was to small it kept riding up and Id had it so on my lunch break from work I bought one and put it on and I felt dirty all day. I went right home when I got off and took a shower and threw the shirt in the wash. Then its fine. My ex husband was gross he would buy clothes from the thrift store and not wash em first. Ewwww. I love thrift store clothes but washing is a must.

Yes I have to wear something new straight away. I can not bear to wash it first no matter what chemicals it might have on it. I love the feel of wearing new clothes, I just think it is the best feeling ever. I also love the smell of something new. I do not get to have new clothes very often so this is probably why!

I usually wear what I have bought right away then wash later.I have never heard of formaldehyde being used to preserve clothing. the odor would I think give it away as it has a very strong putrid odor. I dont think that can be. anyway I want to enjoy what I bought so will 'wear it right away.

I do not wash new clothes. I have seen my kids do it saying that other peoples' germs are on them. I dont know about the formaldehyde that is new to me. I like wearing new things but I can save them for a short time before wearing them. lol

Hello, I never used to wash before I would wear it , but it is something I started to do . I one time could smell the clothing when I was out ,it had like a shopping store kinda smell. I do like to wear things right away if it is something i bought for an event , or something like that . I sometimes buy things that will just sit there for months, and then I will give it to my mom , or sell on ebay.

hi kbourgerie! for me i usually wash new clothes first before wearing them. and i guess it depends also where i bought it and the situation. if i bought the clothes in a store where everything seems to be clean and that they give new stocks to customers who decided to buy the dress, and if the dress doesn't smell that bed without blemish on it, i would feel comfortable wearing it without washing it first. but if i bought it in an open store where dust from the outside goes in and the sales attendants would give the customers whatever they have picked up from the display, i would be hesitant to wear it and i would end up washing it first because of the dust that have accumulated on it. on the other hand, it depends on the situation, like for example, i'm on a travel and i got short with clothes and i've got nothing to wear for the next day. i would buy clothes at the nearest store and since clothes usually doesn't dry up overnight, i wouldn't wash it and just wear it on the next day since i have no choice. i'd rather wear a new one than wear dirty clothes i've worn already.

Hihi, Usually, no. I won't wear something I buy immediately - unless I bought it particular for an occasion. Then that would be a different matter altogether. Then again, I seldom buy new clothes so there.

I always wear new clothes right away. Most of the time I can't wait to get them home from the store so I can wear them, hehe. I never heard about the formaldehyde to perserve clothes either. I have no idea if that is true or not. Have a lovely night!

nope. i never wear new clothes without washing them first. i have skin allergies and i am afraid the chemicals they use in the factories of clothes might trigger my allergies. and i don't also like the smell of the clothes i just bought, they smell like a shopping mall!LOL!

I'm not aware that they put formaldehyde to clothes to preserve it. Its already my habit to wear my new clothes without having them washed first for the first time.. Well, with that little information you gave I think I would be washing my newly bought clothes before wearing them! Thanks!
