It depends on what you're looking for. If you want a low maintanence pet then a cat is the way to go. No walking, they entertain themselves, they will be affectionate but are ok if you don't want to be. You can have one by itself as they don't get lonely for other cats. They are relatively cheaper than dogs as you don't need leashes, licenses, collars, or shots. If you want to go out for the evening you don't have to arrange for someone to walk the cat. You can leave food and water out and they'll take care of themselves. If you have to go away for a couple of days you can leave a couple of kitty pans out with a self filling water bowl and a large bowl of hard food and your good to go.

A couple of misunderstandings here. Cats do like the companionship of other cats; they do get lonely. They do need vet care; in my area rabies shots are mandated by law. Leaving food and water for a cat while you are away is very dangerous. Many things can happen to unattended animals. You should at least have someone one look in on them. Spending time with them would be ideal. Many people misunderstand the needs of our feline companions.

I have both a dog and a cat but my dog is a lot cleaner than my cat as my dog is tied up the whole day and my cat moves and roams all around our colony like a free soul and gets itself dirty i would recommend dogs are cleaner than cats
