the time before you wake

Everyone knows about that little space of time before you wake up when you're still having a wonderful and pleasant dream and you know that you're going to wake soon and you try to hold on to your dream and remember it as long as you can. There's the complete satisfaction of being completely happy and at peace, for that moment in time, everything is as it should be in the world and you know that nothing could be better than that. Is there a name for this period of time before waking? Does anyone else feel this deep satisfaction at such times? Is there an explanation for this phenomenon?

In my house that period of time is called "The few seconds before the dog realizes that you're waking up and jumps all over you". I know what you mean, though, and I also find it very satisfying to enjoy that moment on the weekends. Buuuut, it never lasts long because I must move or something and that alerts the dog who loves me sooooo much that I'm waking up so it's time for kisses and rubbing her tummy.
