We're having tornado warnings for today! I'm very nervous as I've never experienced being in a tornado. I think the worst that I've been around was hail storms. I'm in Canada and this is not normal for tornados to tear through anywhere here. I'm really worried about my son because he's on a field trip today. I had a feeling I should have made him stay home. About 1 hour away from me there were funnel clouds reported and now our whole province is being warned by the weather stations and radios to take them seriously. Do you live in an area where there are tornados and how do you deal with that?

Yes, actually our area is somewhat prone to tornadoes especially recently. In fact I had a tornado come through my development in March. A tree fell and hit my house. i had to have my insurance company come out and investigate. i did receive a check and was able to repair the damage, but it was scary being in the storm especially since I was the only one here. I was afraid my roof was going to blow off.

I am in Minnesota and we get tornadoes often as well. We had a few this week actually SW of my area. A month or so ago one touched down about 5 miles from me. I took some photos just as the funnel went back up in the sky. I've discussions about it also on my page. They are not fun at all. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

When living in Tenn where they happen all the time most people have a storm cellar and go to it I never liked them for ya didnt know what could have crawled in there before hand. When I first moved there they would make the women and kids get down in the hole under the porch. and the men would watch the skies well I got where I would flat refuse to go. and if men wasnt there I would stay top side for if it really hit us some one would have to dig out those under all the debri. there was a great bigg chimney that I could always seeing falling down on top of them. well nothing ever came to that problem at that place but years later Daughter was inone and it ditroied our home was nothing left of it and she and grand son (her nephew was thrown over the hill under a downed tree nothing real serious happen to them. When hubby and I finally got there after traveling all night. it looked like someone had came and just took it away off foundation . they say to find a ditch or basrment to get into.

I live in a state where tornados are a natural thing in the summer time. I am really scared of them as the house we live in does not have a basement we are looking into buying a house and I will be making sure a basement comes along with it!

I remember visiting somewhere in the states and I wished I could remember where it was but my hubby was saying that they don't have basements there? This surprised me in a big way. I hope you find a house with one though or maybe move somewhere where there's lesser tornados. They are very scarey. Stay safe thanks for your comment

hello nixxie, i hope all is well with you guys out there, makes me worried as well bout your son. i didnt hear anything in the past regarding canada having tornados so hope it is not a devastating one like the ones here in US. anyway, the state im in do have tornados once in a while but the county i am living in dont have it for about 10 years now i think, the last one swipe a part of the county i live in but i am not here then so i dont know much about it. i know my husband got a somewhat close encounter on it and he got lucky that it is not a powerful one so when it hits his car there is almost none. i think you guys are aware that you should hide underneath if you have basement then it is much better as it is safer that way. sorry, i dont know much about it just saw it in the news and it is really a bad sight. anyway, i hope at the end of the day it is not as bad as it sounds. takecare and wish you all the best.

Hi jairgirl, I"m not making any moves unless my son is here with me where I feel he's safe and sound. I knew I shouldn't have made him go to school as I had a bad feeling this morning. I'm the type where I would die for my son and that's what I'll do to keep him safe. When my son gets here which I"m praying for, I"ll take him downstairs and take my little radio with us. He doesn't get home for another hour so I'm going to just sit here and wait for him. Thanks for your nice words

Yes i'm in the south in north texas so we have to deal with the threat of them all spring and even sometimes in the summer. It doesn't really bother me like it used to. We are from new york originally and when we first moved here and there was a tornado watch or warning we'd hide in the bathroom but now we don't pay much attention them cause we've never come that close to having one right in my neighborhood.

I've heard that if you hide in the bathtub it's safe there? I also heard to go to the basement and go right under the staircase as this is the most stable place? If you're driving you should find a ditch and go lay in there. I"m glad that you don't have any in your neighborhood Thanks for your comment

Yeah i hear those are the safest places too. I'm glad too. I'd rather not have large funnels of wind blowing through my apartment.

I'm in Manitoba. Yesterday there was a few people who reported some cloud funneling near Wpg, then one touch down not much further from Wpg about 30 minutes away from the other spot where the funnel was spotted. Thanks for your comment

I had a tornado hit my neighbors house but luckily it did just minor damage. Shingles ripped from his roof and a 40 foot pine tree uprooted straight up. My son and I were near that tree 2 minutes before the tornado hit. It was raining then got really green skies then quiet. I told him it was not going to be nice lets get in the garage. We did luckily as we heard the train like roaring sound, then the loud crash sound as the tree was lifted 2 feet out of the soil straight up. I only lost a bunch of branches from my Red Maple tree out front without any damage to the house etc. Here in Minnesota we get our share of tornadoes. Hope things went well for you as well. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I would have been so scared if I experienced that. I think I'm paranoid because I"ve never had the experience with being in a tornado or having to make it through. Maybe once I do, then I would know what to expect and I wouldn't be so scared? I hope you'll be alright too Thanks for your concern

This is very odd for us to get tornados in our province. This year's weather has been terrible. We're still waiting for summer to arrive. I'm starting to doubt it's going to come. Thanks for your concern

Yes it is strange for Canada. I am sure your son is with competent people and will be fine. We have had tornado warnings where I am all month long. It does get scary. My daughter is almost 5. So I keep my wits about me and head for the basement. Try and stay calm, and when he gets home give him a hug. The weather is getting worse everywhere. It has become a global problem. I am sorry and will keep fingers crossed.

Thank you ersmommy. The tornado warnings have let up and it looks like I can quit being paranoid now as my son is home and safe and sound. I gave him a huge hug when I seen him and he was asking me what was wrong so I told him as he had no idea there were warnings here. His field trip was good he said and he's in a happy mood. I'm going to keep myself prepared for future reference because I'm having a hard time trusting this weather.

I am not in an area that tornados but we do have a lot of tornado warnings. When they are some what close to the house we all go to the basement and wait it out. Last weekend was pretty bad. We had a tornado that touched down a few miles away. There seems to be an increase of tornados and they seem to be areas they usually aren't. Take care and be safe!

Thank you ZephyrSun for your concerns. I just can't imagine what you must feel when that happens except panic and fear. You just don't know what the strengths of mother nature can throw at you and it's so mysterious and that's what freaks me out. The weather is so different this year and it seems like summer is never going to arrive as it has been cold. I hope you stay safe and take care.

My little corner of the world has experienced infrequent tornadoes and many warnings. Prepare for the worst, even though it most likely will not amount to anything in the end. If your son's school has a phone chain, call your contact and let them know about the warning. Someone should be able to get into contact with the chaperones and let them know that they may want to consider coming home early or making sure that there is safe shelter where they are. If your home has a basement, you will want to move to that area if a tornado is in fact about to come through your area. Take buckets or bottles of water with you, blankets, flashlights, battery operated radios, food that does not need to be refrigerated and something to keep busy with. If you do not have a basement, stay on the lowest level of your home, stay away from the windows and as close to the center of a room as possible. Being prepared is half the battle. If you do not normally have tornadoes, then it most likely is going to be just a warning. However, if you are ready, it will help.

I've been watching the sky and I've never seen clouds as huge and mixed colors like that before. My cats have been acting really strange for the last couple days as well. I have put together some things to take downstairs with me if I have to go there but right now I feel like I just want to sit here and wait for my son to get home until I do anything. Thanks for your advice rantingqueen
