Do you pay if you're not happy?

I just spent all day at the hairdresser. I went with my mother to her favourite hairdresser so I thought it was safe so I handed over my 'past my waist length locks'. I told him that I wanted a nice deep blood red with lighter red foils. Everything was going ok until after he put the colour through, he told me that he had mixed ash brown with copper red as this will suit my skin colour more. I told him that I loved the red that I had and that I had it that way and was happy for the last six years! He told me that it was going to be fine and it will really look lovely with the lighter foils. I sat still while they put on the foils for over an hour, I had only asked for six and the young girl put on over 25! I was beside myself with worry and the hairdresser asked me what was wrong. I said that I feared my hair was not going to turn out the way I had asked, he said '.... it will be fine, you will love it.' My head started getting warm so I told one of the girls, within five minutes it really started to sting and there was a haze coming off my head! They rushed me to the sink and washed it off. I heard one girl say to another '... oh we need a toner on this...' and there were three of them examining my hair from all angles. I then heard one say '...just don't sit her in front of the mirror!' I responded to this by standing up and I nearly fainted when I saw my fluro orange striped hair! I then sat there for 15 mins while I waited for the hairdresser to come and see what they would do! He came over and picked up parts of my hair and had a look through. He looked at me and said 'You are not happy with this colour?', I said 'No, and I am not going to pay for it'. He said it was ok and he would fix it. It was then I touched my hair and the bottom 15cms was frizzled! I almost threw up! That hair had taken me many years to grow. He said 'oh, no problems, we will give it a bit of a trim'. So much for the 1cm off I had previously asked for. So they put a red colour through and they cut 30cms off the bottom. It looks ok. It cost me $170. I will not go back there and I think it will be probably another 10 years before I see another hairdresser! I am now regretting paying, do you think I should have paid? My hair is now half way down my back instead of me being able to sit on it. I do feel a bit empty and ripped off. I guess this is what you get when you go to a hairdresser. My mum and my brother girlfriends hair worked out fine without a hitch. They just had blonde streaks put through their brown hair so it was straight forward for them. I wish that he had just done what I asked for! I got the foils on a whim, what a mistake. *breathes* Tell me hair grows and it is going to be ok, please!

Yes well, this has taken away any trust I did have for going to the hairdresser - I think I shall cut my own too from now on!

Hi, my friend. I would go back to the salon and demand that he put hair extensions in my hair to the length it was previously, until it grew back to that length. He had no right to go against your wishes like that, and it seems to me that he needs a course in chemistry, because the two products he mixed to colour your hair reacted in an adverse way to one another. Obviously HIS mistake. He didn't do what you asked, which is bad customer service and you have every right to sue him for what he did to your hair. Hair extensions are fine, because my niece had them put in... her hair looked beautiful with them in. So, that's what I would do, to at least get the length back, and if he refuses, serve him a warning that you're going to seek legal advice, immediately. He should not be allowed to mess with people's hair when he doesn't know what he's doing, and it's against their wishes. Brightest Blessings... you hair will grow back, my friend, but in time. It will take you ages to get back what you lost. Treat him as he treated you, and don't buckle!!! xx

Well I am sorry for what happened to you! I would still pay because I got the service (even though it was not a pleasant one), and I would never go back there again! Honey, hair really grows and don't worry. You could use some hair growing shampoo to make your hair grow a bit faster! Just treat this as a new look while you are waiting for the hair growth.

I feel bad for you with the way they treated you when you only asked them to do a few foils and cut alittle bit off..See some hairdressers just dont listen and take it in to there own hands and do as they feel is best for you. I have had it done to me and they ended up cutting all my hair off.. I hope your hair grows back quickly.. I wouldnt have paid for it and i would have stood my ground, you have the right to do so as they were the ones that made the mistake!

i would not have paid. no way. they work in a sevice industry. they serve you. they should do what you ask for even if they dont agree with it if you had asked his advice, then thats a different story. but you knew what you wanted. i would have been furious. i would have spoken to the manager. and not been very polite. it sucks when you're growing your hair out and then you get setbacks.

Oh my! Don't worry madebyrobyn! Your hair will be back to normal and it will grow out healthy and fine. You paid $170 for ruining your hair? I wouldn't have. I would have called a manager, or owner or something if the hairdresser insists that your hair is okay and that he'll fix when he just made it worse. Now I'm scared. I'm actually planning on trying out this salon that I've been looking at for so long and have my hair colored and trimmed in time for my birthday party next week. I know some friends who goes to that salon but when I read what happened to your hair, I got scared. Ooooh. That salon is also quite pricey so I'm really thinking hard about going there. Anyway, good luck with your hair. Everything's going to be okay. (and that just rhymed) Smile!

I'm sorry! I used to have very long hair that I was very protective of and I had a few nightmare treatments in my time. First, yes the hair will grow. Second, even if you paid them you can still write them a letter and include before and after digital photos and DEMAND a refund. It is the least they can do. From the way you described events it doesn't sound like you asked for the treatment. It sounds like he steamrolled over your concerns and suggestions. Frankly, that makes this HIS haircut...so why should YOU pay?? Send them a letter via certified mail and state in it that you will seek legal advice if they cannot come to a settlement with you. Good luck and I hope your hair grows fast!

It's frustrating to have your hair done that you don't like. But its ok it will still grow. Just wait and it will restore to its original color and length. I also had a bad experience with cutting my hair. I instructed the hairdresser for the length that will be neckline but it turns out to be so short that I look like more as a male. I just pay for the service but never leave a tip and told the hairdresser that its not what I want and informed him that he still have to improved his skill. I leave the salon without looking back and promise not to comeback again.

oh no , hell no-o!!! yes, your hair will grow back, you poor thing, oh my goodness, i am in awe that you paid for it and they didn't even offer you free treatments of all kinds of things for months until it did grow out. when you said you weren't going to pay for it , you really should've stuck to that, and possibly said you were going to go to the media or something or of some sort if they didn't take care of it, and i mean take care of it- like until it grows out at least. they are lucky you didn't sue and take them to small claims, take down names of people who were there etc. you poor thing, my heart goes out to you....

I am so sorry you had such a bad experience with the hairdresser. But I think the big mistake was letting someone touch your hair that you was not used to. And he made a mistake by not following your orders on what to do for your hair. I personally would not have paid. The owner should have not charged you since the guy messed up your hair and caused you to have to get it cut off. I have had the same hair dresser for over 38 years. She has once to do something I didn't like or didn't ask for.She may make suggestions, but if I don't like the suggestion, it isn't done. And, if I ever got a $170 bill from my beautician, I would die!
