I'm currently writing a novel and have been for the past 2 years nearly. Right now I'm on page 178, I want 200 pages because I figure that's a good amount for someone who is trying to get her first novel published. Originally I wanted 350, because those are around the page number of books that I love reading, a lot of James Patterson book are around that page count, and Dean Koontz, and Stephen King can go on forever, not that I'm comparing myself to them, because I'm not, I'm just trying to find out what people like.

I think you're aiming for a good target number. Much shorter than that will lead to people feeling that the story may have been undeveloped. I think once you're over that mark you could go on for as long as you wish. As you say, Stephen King goes on forever! If you get stuck get a few people to read a draft because I'm sure they can help you develop it further. Just remember that if you do run out of things to write, don't obviously pad it out people will pick up on it.

You seem and sound very intelligent, there's no way you'd want to read just a page of it to see what you think, is there?

Let me tell you something mate, a story cannot be contained. It needs room to grow and change over time. You can't give you're book a page number just because, otherwise you will find that you want to add something but can't because you have reached the quota of pages. My phylosophy is "As long as it takes the story to be told, than that's as many pages as it needs" A childrens book I wrote ended at 85 pages, the book I am editing right now is at 350 when double spaces and formated corectly. However, I have two epilogues and a complete ending. Not to mention that I have another book that is at a hundred and some odd pages as well. So, all in all, it just depends on the writer and story, and if your characters have a penchant to not act like you've tried to write them acting.......

I'm not trying to contain it at all, I'll let it go for as long as it wants, my personal wish is that it would go for 350, but it's starting to feel finished, which saddens me because I enjoy working on it, there's just this feeling hanging over me that these characters lives are nearly done for now, at least in this book.

Well I just think that you should write as many pages as it takes to tell your whole story. This might not be a good idea to some people, but I never really set a page goal for myself. I don't know how long it'd take me to finish what I want people to know, but I know that no matter how many pages it takes, i'll be happy if my story is good.

That's the whole point of writting. The story you write can't have a page count because you don't know what's going to happen. I love to leave stuff open so that I can connect it to something else within the plot. My third book (which I am working on right now) is more convoluted than it's predicesor. I've also gotten away from the stupid romance! (blah! I can't write that!) and since the relationship is all ready solid, than I can write and not have to worry if their relationship is going too fast or whatever. Thought, I have to say that in my first one, I kinda had to have two characters ( who weren't really into each other) get married because I had to fill in a plot hole and that seemed to be the best way. Gosh, anyway, what I am trying to say is that leaving the page count open will take a lot of stress of of you. In stead, you could try to write a whole chapter. However, long that is. When I write fan fiction, my chapters are usually five. For my novel, my chapters are seven-nine. The longest chapter in the novel I am editing right now is at 12. So, I find that it's easier for me and the characters if I have a chapter count all ready in my head. Like, how many chapters do I suppose it might take me to tell the story and all that fun rot. *lol*

If you would like me to read a page I'd be happy to give you my opinions on it.
