Medicine - Do you take it or not

I am against taking medicine unless I am in absolute need of it. I find that when I'm prescribed antibiotics, it will my that illness better then it will create another illness entirely! I'll get antibiotics for that illness, get cured, but then a new illness pops up. It's a horrible vicious cycle. So now I refuse to take medicine unless I'm crouched in a fetal position in pain and can't move. I don't even take tylenol or aspirin, rather I just live through the pain, because I believe I should only take these pills if I really can't move or can't function. I just feel like to take these pills too much would cause a dependency on drugs, making you too weak to suffer just a little headache or tummyache, and it could also build up your immunity against the medicine so that they won't work as effectively for you in the future. What are your thoughts on this? Do you pop pills anytime you're in pain or do you suffer through it? Do you refuse to take antibiotics or are you okay with it? What kind of experiences have you had with medicine.

In all honesty I am quite dependant on medicines and so is my mother, i suffer a lot with different illnesses and have to have various medications. I wouldnt say i enjoy taking them I would love to be medicine free but unfortunalty i need them. I am not against any prescriptions medicines if they are genuinly needed. I feel some people do take the micky with them tho and at the first sign of a little pain are popping open the box of pain killers.

not really, i do not believe in popping in tablets at the drop of a hat. sometimes i could be in a lot of pain and what i do is keep telling myself no i dont have any pain, sometimes it works. Only when i am really sick do i take medicines.

I also believe in the whole "mind over matter" concept. I think pain can sometimes be in the head. Not to say that people aren't actually in pain. But sometimes pain can be controlled by your thoughts. If you dwell on the pain too much, then of course it's going to feel like it hurts more. But if you try not to pay any attention to it, just monitoring it once in awhile, it should be more tolerable.

i also don't like to take medicine at all... if i'm not really sick and have to spend myself on the bed, then i won't take medicine... even the prescribed medicines... i will only take it if i really need to... i don't want to get addicted to medicines and i agree with you... taking too much medicines make our body to be immune to that medicines and the next time we will need a bigger dose of the medicines... and so on... so i don't like medicines... take care and have a nice day...

I'm like you too. I'm very worried that if people take too much medicine, it could cause immunity amongst the virus causing viruses to mutate into unmanageable strains! Such a scary thought.

Me too.I really don't like taking medications.I only take it when I feel the need to.I'm tired of taking medications. It's been 4 or 5 yrs I think that I'm taking my maintenance medication which I can't take anymore. Thus,at this point in time,I don't take pills anymore.I'm steady on the injection for my maintenance. So sometimes if I feel sick and not feeling well I don't usually take any medications anymore coz I already hate taking such thing.

After that long of taking medication, I'd get sick of it too. I hope you feel better soon!

You are the same as me then.I will only take the stuff if its dire, then I put it on the side and leave it there to look at for a good while before I wll swallow any of it,There is so much hype about medicine today, one day its good for you and the next day its bad for you,you dont know where you stand with it.The docs seem to dish it all out as though it were sweeties and we end up with tablets that arent used ,then when we want to get rid of threm we have to take them to the pharmacy to be destroyed as that seems the only way to do it.

I dont take medication unless otherwise it is very serious, usually I wait for the pain to go by itself, I can say my endurance level is bit high. It happened during my daughters birth, I didn't take the epidural to ease the pain, somehow I went past those painful labor hours. so my conclusion is if you build your resistance within and avoid depending too much on medicines you have a radiant health.

I suppose everyone's pain threshold is difference. Luckily, mine is quite high too so I can tolerate quite a bit of pain. I guess that makes it easier to keep up the willpower against taking meds too fast.

Yes, T'm too like you only. I hate taking medicines. I never take medicines unless I'm in need of it very badly. That is until I visit a pshysician. Because I never go to doctor unnecessarily. If at all I'm very sick or if I need some help, I will move to the doctor. If the doctor suggests some medicines, I will take them. But I don't take any medicines on my own just to get a temporary relief. I too think it can have any side effect or it may result in someother pain.So I try to avoid taking medicines for all the pains.

I know firsthand that it causes other problems, then you go back on the pill. After my last problem, I decided I wouldn't take antibiotics again unless I was in extreme, absolute, can't-move pain. Thanks for your insight!

I too dun take medicine unless really neccessary.. Because i dun want my body system to over rely on antibiotics till my own body cant fight the bacterias on their own.. Thus it's only till i'm so sick that i cant walk or have no energy, only then i will see a doctor or take medicine. If not, most of the time i will choose to self heal.. hehe

yeah.. ANd it will be much worse if the virus become immune to the medicine that u always take.. By then, it's too late as our body can no longer protect itself and it will become very vulnerable to virus attacks and become fragile..

Yeah. Nowadays you hear about illnesses that have re-emerged that hadn't been around for 50 years. Scary!

I feel that way too. I don't want to take too much medicine until it gets to the point that my body won't react to medicine anymore. It's a scary thought to get too dependent on medicine. I believe the body is a strong organ that can fight off many types of illnesses without the aid of medicine. Of course, there are still the odd occassions when the body does need the help of some antibiotics.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Sorry to hear about your medical issues. It must be very difficult to deal with. I do think if it's as a last result, it's acceptable to take medicine. I'm just concerned people are too quick to jump on the pill-wagon. Take care!

i think that in general, i do not take medication. even when it's prescribed for me, i look at the side effects and weigh them against the benefits to see if i feel whether or not they are necessary for me. i take antibiotics only when i know that i have an infection that won't get better on its own- like a sinus infection or something along that line. i do suffer from migraines, but i find that over the counter medications don't help, so i've found other ways to cope. the only thing that i'm really stuck on using is my inhaler whenever my asthma acts up. i think that there are so many diseases out there right now that could be totally prevented if people stopped over-medicating and let nature take its course. there are tons of diseases that have recently re-emurged such as scarlet fever that you very rarely heard about as little as 10-15 years ago.

It's scary to hear seemingly obsolete diseases making a re-occurrence because it could be a new strain that's immune to today's antibiotics. Oh, and I'll read the side-effects too and have often stopped taking or not even start taking the prescription because the side effects have scared me off. What a waste of perfectly good paid-for medicine, huh?

When I'm in pain I will usually take a panadol and not suffer through it. Its true that its not good to depend on pills but you can take it sometimes when you in pain. Try applying medicated oils to the areas you are feeling pain , why make yourself suffer? Besides, antibiotics prescribed by doctors should be finished even if you are feeling better because this will help to build immunity against the sickness. I f you don't do so then you might fall sick again.

I didn't realize that if you stopped taking your antibiotics before your supposed to, that it'll build immunity. Thanks for the new info!

I am also against in taking medicines unnecessarily. But if you are ill you have to take some measures to cure that. I think it is always better to have some herbal remedy or use alternative medicines for small illness like cold, body pain, head ache etc. These medicines, especially herbal medicines will not have any side effects and it will not carry us to the chain of illness. It is also not good to ignore illness. Sometimes body pain or head ache etc should be a sign of some other major illness. In my opinion if these conditions prolonged for 2 or 3 days we should consult a doctor and find out what the problem is.

Yah, I try herbal remedies too, but sometimes even that scares me. I usually try to let the pain go away on its own unless its really unbearable. It's true, if pain persists for too long, just see your doctor.

I prefer home remedies too. If it's a simple headache, it could also be your body's way of telling you to slow down and just relax. Thanks for posting, nupats!

The usual cause of my needing a medicine is headache. I usually get a pang in my head when I overslept or missed my mug of coffee. If the pain persist after I eat main meal, then I would take a medicine and drink coffee.

Have you tried reducing the amount of coffee you drink? From what I understand, drinking coffee is addictive to the point where if you don't drink it, you get headaches. I guess it's like withdrawal. So to avoid headaches, you could maybe try weaning yourself off coffee or drink decaf instead? I don't know if decaf would prevent the headaches though.

I'm not against medicine, if I feel like aching or something that I should need to take a medicine, I won't doubt of taking one. Well I'm not that sickly by the way. I get cough and cold for like once a year. hehehe..

I used to get an annual cough/cold too but noticed that I haven't been getting it as often as I got older. But now I don't take too much medicine either. So I'm not sure if that makes a difference or anything. It's good that you don't get sick that often.

I share the same opinion with you on some kind of medicine like antibiotic. But I do take some medicine from time to time. It is made of herb which is natural. I need them to make my digest system functions better. That's the reason why I like Chinese traditional medicine. It won't bring some side effect.

Hey sorry for comment back so late because I am trying to get a driving license these days. Yes to some people, the Chinese traditional medicine is smelly. But I am so used to it. After all, I used them ever since I was a little girl.

I do take medicine if I absolutely have to. But it takes a lot of pain or discomfort before I do so. I will try herbal stuff though. I have tried Chinese medicine in the past and still sometimes do. They're smelly though! :)

hi i m a doctor.ya its true that medicines have side effects, but its not necessary that everybody will have these side effects.so we should take medicine when its required,,but not for all minor ailments

I agree that for minor ailments it may not be necessary to take medicine. I get worried when I hear people just reaching for the pill bottle as soon as they feel a little pain. The body is stronger than that. But it is true for more major sicknesses, medicine is necessary.

im not dependent on pills but id rather choose fresh herbal medicine. like when i confined to hospital because of kidney failure, the stone did not get by the doctor. so until now i suffered from so much pain in my lower back. the doctors prescribe me some antibiotics and pain reliever but it only add another pain in my stomach. so now , i stop taking medicine. so i think much better is to take herbal like leaves of taheebo. it lessen the pain that i experience in my back and in my pocket.

I like to try herbal medicine too, but not the fresh kinds. I just go to the store and buy the over the counter kinds occasionally. That sounds bad that they can't get the stone out of your kidney. I hope you feel better and improve and eventually get the stone out!

Yes, I am taking medicines, unfortunately, that's because I have a condition that needs maintenance medicines, but if it's just for pain, No, i usually just try to bear it out, when I really can't take it that's when I get second thoughts on taking pain meds.

I'm sorry to hear that you have a condition. It must be hard to be dependent on medicine. But if that's what you need to be healthy, then you have to do it. Good luck.

Dear friend,I have never taken antibiotic till now as I have been that sick, when I had fever 6 years back I had not taken any medicine. Our body always try to come back to normal condition on its own ,so we have fever and if we try to stop that by taking medicine ,we disturb its process.Instead we should wait for four five days,if it is not o.k. we can have our blood test and do according to doctor. If is not serious avoid taking allopathic medicine as it has side effects .And if u are on water therapy no need to take medicine. But I take aurvedic home remedies.

Home remedies are the first option for me. Then if they don't work, only then will I go see a doctor and get some prescribed medicine. Our bodies are very resilient.
