The Confederate Flag

What do you think should be done about the Confederate Flag? Is it appropriate to let it be flown in public, or does it simply represent racism and hate? South Carolina use to have it at their Capital Building in Columbia, but they were forced to remove it from government grounds. Should we let people fly it in public or ban it?

I understand that those who had past family members that fought on the confederate side may wish to teach their kids abut their heritage? But it should be a historical lesson and not more. My beef is with those that are living still in fantasy and think THEY are confedertes. The NORTH WON! -Get over it and fly the real flag. We are all united now. We have a flag. Time to come together and all fly our American flag. If ou wish to concede, then do it legally and chnage it. Otherwise, we have a great flag and it is of the United States! That's the one to fly now. The Confederate flag is offensive to some. It belongs in a history museum now and no where else.

People are allowed to fly any other flag - so why ban this one? It would be a violation of the freedom of speech. Besides, the flag does not stand for racism - it never has. It stands for many of the values of the former confederacy, yes, but not racism.

I was just walking in our supply closet at work to get some paper- and I ran right into a flag pole with a confederate flag hanging on it. I have to be honest and say...it took me by surprise and YES I feel defensive about it. I am a woman of color- and although people TRY and point out that the flag is not about racism...well the south WAS...and It gives me a terrible feeling even being in its presence. Do you guys know that schools in the south right now as we speak are trying to bring segregation BACK?? I read an article on it last week. Racism is still VERY MUCH alive down south and although this flag may not have been meant to represent that- IT DOES. It makes people like me- of none white decent- feel uneasy, unsure of my surroundings, and a little fearful for the people that want to still fly it. Like someone above said ..GET OVER IT! The north WON! Fly the American flag ONLY!

Hey cobracar, how's it going? I grew up in a small town in southwest Virginia where the Confederate Flag is displayed frequently. I don't want to stereotype everyone who lives in that region because there are a lot of good people living there who have put the racist ideals behind them. But there are also those who do fly the Confederate Flag and use it as a symbol of white power which causes a lot of friction in the area. But it could be considered freedom of expression or speech to do so. However, I believe that flying the flag at state and federal buildings is wrong as it does represent slavery and oppression.

Why are only the negatives about the South associated with the flag? What about the positives? No one talks about the negatives of the North during the time period. Hell, they were the ones burning whole cities and all of that crap during the war!

Well I don't see why People say it's racist. At this day in time it basically is a symbol for southern culture and heritage. And I really don't see why modern day black people get offended by it... Nothing happened to them it was history and forever will be history. They make it seem like they were going through the civil war when basically the civil war was over trying to keep the confederates apart if the union. And president Lin on also said in a speech "it wasn't my intentions to abolish slavery, only to save the united states".

I don't see why it should be banned. The south has a great deal of pride for its identity. The flag doesn't symbolize racism or slavery, its represents the southern region of our country. It is still a part of many state flags in the south and is a common decoration. It should not be equated with the same stigma that the swastika has nor should it or can it be banned. If you can burn our country's flag, then how would you ban a past flag of the confederacy?

Why do anything? It is part of our country's history, and it represented the values of the confederate states, not racism or hate. We cannot selectively rewrite our history to make it socially acceptable to the mindset present day America. What is done is done. Should we also remove the Declaration of Independence from public view because not everyone in this nation agrees with its writing?
