First he needs exercise. Take him for a long walk at least twice every day, or for a swim as well (Labs love the water). Then make sure that he has acceptable things to do when you're away. You could get some toys for him and some things to chew on. If it's possible, use a gate or something to confine him to a specific room of the house while you're gone. The kitchen or a bathroom is usually a good place because he can't damage much in either of those rooms. Make sure he has food and water while you're gone. The big key though, is lots of exercise. A tired dog is a good dog!

Bring him for obedience training before you go off to college! You must get his training squared away before college or things will be ugly! Also get him some bones to chew on. Use the bones to teach him what he can and can't chew on! Also block off and area in your house or pick up all shoes, paper, and any other objects! You can use a cage to keep him from wrecking the house, but i really don't like doing that! dogs usually chew things when they are bored and lonely. If he becomes lonely while you are gone, your dog will become destructive. A way to solve his is by playing some relaxing music while you are gone. This will relax him and keep him some company while you are gone! Good luck! :)

i liked both of your suggestions and i will implement it tooo. but as you say him to confine hime him . i really dont like to do that with hime. as he also wants to roam around in house. if i give him bone he becomes a lion and doesent allow any one to pass or stand nearby . he just tries to attack and bite. even me that is big problem when i give him bones.
