Animal Control= no help for injured cats

"Blue", the cat in question - My neighbors abandoned cat

I am so upset right now, beyond upset really. So I have these neighbors who have a cat. This cat was an indoor cat and last winter they thought they're rather get 2 teacup dogs (whom are now also MIA) and put their 2 cats to live outside. One died during a tornadoe and the other has been ok as I and another neighbor feed it and give it water and tend to it when it's sick. I have a cat, if my cat where lost and injured, I would hope someone would give it the same attention. So today I go outside and I notice that the surviving cat has what seems to be like a fractured left side of it's face near it's eye, a cut and yellow thick puss coming from there. So I went to give it food as always and water and it was meowing more than usual and trying so hard to come inside. This cat has the most loving personality and is so sweet. It's about a year old now. I can't let him in because I have a cat and she would just beat up on him (she doesn't like other cats, the little weirdo). So I gave him some organic food which has little vitamin bits in it, some water and put some gloves on and tried to clean the wound with some first aide stuff. Now this cat always lets me touch it all over and it started to back away, I tried as best I could but I didn't get to clean it well. Not 2 seconds later it had these "tears" of puss again. It's not the first time it's been ill but that's the worse I've seen, it looks bad and swollen. Not to mention being a super skinny cat from the no water/no food that it's owners give it. Ok so I called the Humane Society and they advised me to call Animal Control as they don't do anything. So I call Animal Control and got transfered to their dispatch. OMG really? The man sounds like he kicks puppies on his days off for fun with all the effin concern he had. This is what he said to me: Animals are like people and they run when they see the police, if the animal runs they're not going to chase it anywhere. He had this attitude like I was retarded for calling. He took the address of the cat's "home" and hung up. I've had issue reporting very, very, very near death animals to them before and they not doing anything even when the animal is chained up and dying in freezing weather. That animal ended up dying and being there for 2 days before the owners realized it. Animal Control never did a thing despite daily calls from me for a month. I have NEVER seen an Animal Control vehicle around the city, ever. When I told the guy that the neighbors kids constantly beat on the poor cat, the guy actually chuckled!!! WTF is that? I'm infuriated for the sake of this and many more that get reported I'm sure, animal. I'm infuriated that MY government dollars are being wasted on a service that does nothing and certainly not their jobs. So I'm thinking about calling one of our local news stations, we have 2 that do investigative reporting and specialize on local government frauds, misconduct and misuse of taxpayer rescources. They even got 2 government employees fired for using cars issued to the mayor's office to go to strip clubs during office hours. Now I don't want to bring up specifically this cat with them because my neighbors are so the kind to attack back and I have my own cat who I'm afraid could get hurt in the process. These people use their kids to run drugs, as young as 5 yrs old... I kid you not. Don't even get me started on DHR not doing a thing about that either. Life means nothing to them and I have to take care of me and mine. That's the thing that keeps me from contacting the news. Should I go for it anyway and ask not to be identified? Advice please!

Oh crap...don't get me going about Animal Control...I HATE THEM...Not all "agents" as they are called are bad...some of them that are here in my area were people that went down during the Katrina incident and helped rescued stranded and abandoned animals...but for the most part I have no great love for them in general You are in a dilemma though since as you say your "lovely" neighbors could retaliate and make things difficult for you and could do harm to you or your "baby" and I remember from previous discussions you had that one of the reasons you moved to where you are now due to all the problems you had at your former residence and how the people did harm to your kitty there. But yes if there is some way to remain anonymous and can report all this to the news media and especially how uncaring Animal Control is, do so

I knew you'd more than get this one. Yeah I don't know what it is about Animal Control that makes them forget the animal part of their jobs. It's so insane for them to be surprised that someone has the nerve to call and ask them to do their job. I'm going to see if I can find out a way to stay anonymous and report that agency.

Animal control is a joke. I am surprised the Humane Society did not have other resources though. Who handles animal abuse cases in your area? If I were you I would call the local news station and tell them about your experience with animal control. That animal needs help ASAP. I would call you vet and find out if there are any free or low cost animal clinics you can bring it to. Alternatively, find a no kill shelter in your area. They will come pick up the animal and adopt it out one it is healed.

Animal control handles the abuse/neglect cases in our area. I would bring it to a vet but I can't afford to take my own to one right now, let along one that I don't have any rights to. The problem with the rescue shelters is that they can't legally just take it because it does belong to someone.

if you kindly trap the cat and take it to a vet, along with this story - ie: it isn't yours, they shouldn't charge you, and should have no problem treating the poor thing - i think you need to get in touch with the ASPCA, also - or the vet may do it for you... this is horrible that animal control will pick up a loose pet and take it to the humane society; charge you fines, etc, etc, etc...yet will not help an animal who needs it so desperately!!

It is shocking that so much evil happens in these situations. I really think that the cat's life is short lived as far as the animal control goes. It takes an act of God to light a fire under the seats of some of those people. As far as the safety of the children goes, stay on the department in charge of child welfare. The wheels of the government turn very slowly.

Yeah it's crazy. They turn very slowly. They let their 13 yr old drive and pick up the younger kids from school and he got caught by the police who did nothing but give him a lecture and let him go home.

Ok, as most people here know, when it comes to animal suffering, not much else makes me angrier. Animal control is useless when it comes to stuff like this. Don't report the people to anyone, sounds like you could just welcome a whole lot of trouble you don't need. The needs medical attention, stick it into a crate, and get the cat to a vet. Find a new home, and give the cat to a friend or family member. The owners won't care less, and you'll save that animal.

I'd love to take the cat in, he's a total sweetheart and he's so attached to us. The thing is that I can't afford to take him to a vet at all if not I totally would. The only thing I can do is continue to harass Animal Control and treat the wound myself when he comes over to eat. I'm giving him some organic food that has vitamin bits in it and an extra vitamin that's super good which I use for my own cat when she's feeling ill. I keep fresh water out and just hope for the best.

Can you take it somewhere to have it put down so it will be out it its misery. Or call the animal control back and say you have caught the cat and see if they will come and pick it up. I know our animal control came out because our neighbors complained that my dog was barking. MY Petie is a barker but not at all the times the neighbors complained. The neighbor continued to complain after I had gotten a bark collar. I had to have them come out and make sure I had the collar on correctly. I think the neighbor was being a jerk. She did not like my son moving in with me he had long hair. She was 90 years old and was afraid of him. He is harmless but she did not even take the chance to get to know us.

I can't have him put down myself because I can't afford it. Animal Control here is so way beyond useless. Honestly I've noticed that people in this area seem to think of animals as they would like a toy or piece of furniture. They don't see them as life or worth a second thought. Everyone I've met here thinks I'm insane for treating my cat as the spoiled princess she is. I had one friend freak out because my cat had toys. I'm like it's a cat, what is she supposed to do for fun? Balance my checkbook? Jeez, people here just don't care or get it really.

Ok, tell me your animal control number and I'll call the guy and cuss him out. LOL Sorry, but I am SOOOO a cat lover (I have 7) and his attitude pisses me off. First off, call your city hall and complain. The dispatch guy is paid by your city. Secondly, ask that a "humane trap" be brought out to you so that you can catch the cat with food. More than likely they will have to put the cat down, but at least it will no longer be suffering. I am one that feeds the local strays here. I noticed this evening one of them has apparently been hit by a car and has a broken leg. I too am going to have to call animal control in the morning and ask them to bring me a trap. Oh - and calling the local news - great idea. But I would suggest remaining unknown. Don't need pissy neighborsh. Good luck!

I really hope they do come out. I saw a paper on their door so maybe they already came out and I didn't notice. Doubt it but maybe. The kids are always out so a trap would be really hard to pull off. Today is the first quiet day in the area so maybe they're away? If I don't see them out tomorrow then I might try that. Thanks!

well, i never try to contact animal rescue here before... but from your post, i gather that the animal rescue in your country is really doing a terrible job and not protecting animals at all... i feel so sorry for the cat and it is so fortunate to have a kind-hearted person like you to look after it... hopefully it will get well soon... take care and have a nice day...
