Air conditioning, Swamp Cooler (evaporative cooling) or fans and open windows?

I like the idea of being environmentally conscious. My one big green sin is a love of freon - I love air conditioners...which do you use - which do you prefer - and hey - what's your 'green sin' your convenience over conscience choice?

Got to have my air conditioner--I just can't do without it. I don't function when I am too hot--can't sleep either. So I run my air more than a lot of people. Cost me a pretty penny too, but in my mind it can't be help. I need to be comfortable.

We got an energy efficient one and just use it in the bedroom -where we really need it - for sleeping - to actually sleep. If we keep the door open it seems to cool off the kitchen too and the bedroom it shares a wall with seems cooler too when before that bedroom was the warmest in the house. My toddler and I go in there after being outside or to take reading breaks. Grab a book and some warm air.

Oh I love the air conditioning too....was a time I didn't have it and I don't know how I did it. When the kids were little we didn't have it and so used fans. Sometimes when it was really hot I'd put a pan of ice cubes in front of a fan and try to cool it that way....then take the kids out for supper or to a movie just to cool off....I love my air!

Oh yeah, I love movie theatres in the middle of the week in the middle of the summer. No one there sometimes but you in a cool dark theatre with a two hour movie adventure in front of you and treats you wouldn't normally have! Good stuff.

I do the fans and open windows thing during the summer..don't really have a choice since I don't have air conditioning...and I'm glad I don't to be honest..when I hear what people's electric bills I'm sure glad I don't have that extra expense

Electric bills and maybe more colds? Going from extreme hot to extreme cold. I still love it, don't have a choice either - 'cept in the bedroom. We have one of those energy star AC's that are made to cool one room.

We don't have air conditioning at home, but I've been on the road this week, and soaking up the AC everywhere I go. In really hot and humid places, it's the only way to go. My big sin, however, is paper plates. I know they're very wasteful, but we don't have a lot of ceramic plates, so sometimes paper plates are the only thing that we have to use. And they're so much easier to use when you're just having some toast or a sandwich.

I like paper plates too, especially before or after moving or before a trip. Were you on the road for pleasure?

I like the noise of fans, it drowns out other noises - like dogs barking and provides a nice white noise to fall asleep by. ReeRee, haven't seen you in my discussions before - welcome! And welcome to Mylot - its a great place.

I don't have refrigerated air, but I would LOVE to. Sort of. It does have some drawbacks other than the electric bill. Usually when you have air conditioning, you have sealed windows, extra insulation and the whole works. When it's cooler than 90 degrees and there's a breeze blowing, I like to open up all the windows in the house and let nature cool it. When it gets really hot, I go for a fan unless it's just too extremely hot for the fan to do any good, then I give in and turn on the evaporative cooler, which only cools one room in my house. I only leave it on til the room cools down to 80 degrees, then turn it off.
