Do you Give Your Babies Medicine When They Have Colds? Or You Use Different Alternative Medicines? My baby has been suffering for two days now with common colds. The doctor has given him Nasal Salinase to help him breathe. I was a little confused because I thought, he should be given something like cold medicines to make the it go away. But the doc said, not to worry because it's only common colds and he has antivirus shots already.Just give plenty of liquids and hot soup. What do you do when your baby has colds?

It depends on the severity of the cold, and the age of my child. Doctors are loathe to prescribe antibiotics now, due to the fact that viruses are adapting and becoming immune to the antibiotics faster than we can make new ones that work. Ask your Doctor if you can use an over the counter remedy such as a cold medicine for babies just to ease his symptoms. There are some great ones, and they will work great for taking care of the normal symptoms while your baby recovers.

Antibiotics don't work on colds or the flu. Doctors used to prescribe it to quiet the mothers that would demand it, but in light of recent evidence of antibiotic resistance, now they outright refuse where it's not warranted. In addition, over the counter medicines are potentially harmful to kids under the age of 2 and the FDA has warned against them. A lot of pharmacies are now taking those products off the shelves. Too many parents over-medicate or don't follow directions closely and accidentally kill their children.

If you feel that your baby needs cold medicine talk to your pharmacist to see what and how much he recommends.

For what I know babies aging 0-2yrs should not be given medicines for cold and coughs. THe have ban it. When my baby has cold the doctor just gave her also a salinase to help her breathe but I seldom use that to her. Instead I use to give her a lot of water and juices. I also boil water with rock salts and when it is boiling already I put my baby near the stove. That way she can breath well.

dear eihra, i know the plight of a mother because I am also a mother. Common cold as the name indicates is common,is a small illness which even if you don't treat also will go away with in one week .Only thing you have to be very careful is to see that the baby's chest is clear camphor tied in thin cotton cloths put near his sleeping place will surely reduces her/his nose blockage. Even eucalyptus the disinfectant of the natural world you can put in a hand kerchief and alow to smell once all the germs will get killed and baby will become germ free and fighting fit

I don't give synthetic medicine to babies. Just plenty of water and hot chicken soup. I always massage his back and do appropriate pressing on reflex points and I always keep him warm.

The nasal Salinase will also help kill the virus in the nose as well as help him breath. This is where the common cold most usually attacks the body because it's a perfect environment for it to grow. The cold medicines that we used to give to babies didn't make the cold go away. It just eased the symptoms, but has been proven to cause side effects that can be devastating. I know your little one is miserable and it's hard for you to do so little, but this will help the immune system to grow stronger. Do be sure to get plenty of liquids into him as the body tends to dehydrate with even a mild cold.

When my boys were infants and came down with common colds, I would give them infants Motrin just to ease their discomfort. As they were in their toddler years there is a much wider variety of children's cold medicines. I also used a vaporizer in their room to help with a stuffy head.
