If You Had The Money To Spend, Would You REALLY Want This?

The $249,600 Rolex Watch - Image of an expensive Rolex Watch

In one of my discussions I asked if anyone has made really strange assumptions about you, and how people can get really bizarre erroneous ideas about a person. One of the repliers jokingly said, Oh, come on, I saw you leave your stretch limo with your Gucci bag waving at us poor folk....this was in reference how a neighbor had assumed that I had inherited $100,000 when my mother died..how I WISH. So I joked back saying...Drat I was hoping to be incognito but yes that was me in my Versace jeans, Christian Dior Blouse, and don't forget my $30,000 Rolex watch. Anyway it got me thinking...Now I know Rolex watches ARE expensive, but I was curious about just how much..and yikes I came across one that is listed as are you ready? $249,600 and is the Rolex: Day-Date Masterpiece (Platinum-Baguettes/ Meteorite-Diamonds/ Platinum-Baguettes)type watch. Now maybe since I've never been a "watch" person to begin with I just can't help thinking how ludicrous it is to spend so much money for one friggin' watch..in fact I haven't even worn a watch in over twenty-five years period. Heck my favorite watch that I still have is an E.T. watch that when you press a button plays the E.T. theme and his finger lights up and cost me $10.00...LOL It got me thinking of other "status" symbols....like Versace jeans that sell for $700.00 just because it has the Versace label I mean yes, I'm still planning to hit it big and have a secure financial income eventually and never worry about bills again...don't we all! But if I was "in the money" I'm sorry, I can think of a lot better things than pittering away money for a watch or jeans or shoes, or whatever just because it has a "label" or is a statue symbol. If you had unlimited amounts of money, never had to scrimp or save money again, would you race out and get items just because it symbolized "wealth" Uh..I still do plan to have my private Lear Jet and Jaguar though..hehee --but yikes for the price of that watch one COULD get a Jaguar--one could even get a really decent home!

Ahhhhh so it was you! LOL Yes I agree that some of these items are so way overpriced, I too would but a home rather than a watch that someone might try to take. I guess these rich folks who can afford them want to show off everything they have and can afford. Even if I was to hit it really big one day I still wouldn't walk own a rolex just to try and impress people. I honestly would use that money to help someone out. My Idea of a Dream Home - image of my dream home
I have printed out pictures of one home I would love to live in...I even have it as part of my screensaver...a great log type home kaplunk in the middle of a lot of land..getting fed up with "city" type living....Ever watch that show on Saturday nights real late..Great Homes and Luxury Estates...some aren't bad...the one they featured last was located in Beverly Hills called Villa Serena and cost ONLY a mere $25 Million..but it looked like a museum...yuk Here's the picture of my type of home I would love...another great place to "dream" about homes is the Unique Homes website...uh, for some weird reason I seem to be drawn to the very expensive homes starting at about $8 million at least...LOL

With unlimited money I would help all the cats and dogs that I can. I'd donate to all the shelters and advocacy organizations. Pay people to campaign about the importance of spaying and neutering, and set up a fund to spay and neuter as many animals as possible. The only luxuries I want are a pool, landscaping, and a little economy car.

If I had unlimited amount of money - I would spend it on a place to live that would have everything. Area for the cats, a library (cat free), a media space (also cat free), a craft area (again, cat free), a suite for each of us, and maybe 2 more for guests. A cottage out back for the former roomie. An elevator (cause we don't do stairs.) The library would be 2 stories, lined with bookshelves, with those ladders on rollers, a spiral staircase (tho we'd go to the elevator of course) all in dark wood, with deep, leather comfy chairs. We'd have a maid, and a cook - well, maybe one of those people that come in and prep food for you every couple of weeks or once a month. Some one to come in and clean the cats boxes... And NO carpet! Maybe some rugs in the cat free areas, but mostly no carpet. Of course, there would be cats sleeping with me. There would also be a safe, outdoor area for the cats to be. Vets to visit so they don't have to get stressed out by car rides. Enough land so I could have a horse or 2, and someone to take care of the horses. Would I feel the need for fancy clothes? No, but a new car would probably be in there. Maybe 2 or 3, one for carrying stuff, and one, like the Smart Car, for just driving around. And probably a hybrid. Ahhh, you asked me to dream....

Hi pyewacket! Oh gosh, Rolex watches are really expensive. Actually most of our friends are wearing Rolex watches. My husband and I wear Timex watches, and we got the two watches for around $50. haha..I think if I will hit it big, I wouldn't really splurge. Even if I would have unlimited funds, I wouldn't buy those "labels" so to be labeled as one of the rich and famous as well. I would rather spend my wealth helping orphans, the sick and the elderly..that way I will have greater satisfaction within. To be honest with you, one of my dream is to have an orphanage or adopt as many orphans as I can but unfortunately, with my financial standing at the moment, I can't even feed one orphan. Sad and frustrating. Take care and God Bless!

That is a great idea too. I will love to care for those unwanted animals too. Maybe for every orphaned child I will care, I will be asking them to care for an orphan animal, that way the orphaned children will learn how to be responsible and caring for another living thing. Wow, nice to dream. Who knows it may come true and I will make it big. haha..

Hi Pye-brand names are ludicrous prices and theres no way I would go out of the way to get them if I had the money to live comfortably-neither would I want people to think that I had money so would carry on as I am-though after sorting my bills out etc I would take an exotic holiday-but I also do know a millionaire who buys clothes from the cheapest shops possible gets furniture from homebase does his own plumbing and solar heating and has a ford escort car-as he has always told me he doesn't want to let anyone think he has money either-but if I had enough to live comfortably I dont think I'd be as extreme as him bb your friend littleowl

None of those items really interested me, except the really decent home. I do not mean huge, or ostentatious, just repair all the broken stuff, and get a grounds keeper or something. I would like one of those new metal roofs with a fifty year warranty. If I pay over ten for a watch, it would immediately get dunked, dropped or lost, although I currently wear a $150 watch that my husband found under the bush in our front yard. When I tell people the things that show up in my front yard or that get handed to me, they tell me I must be practicing the Law of Attraction, but if I am, it is unconsciously. I do feel rich on those occasions that what I need show up, though. I usually say that God sends me things. I know, I diverged from the status symbol discussion, but all I want is comfort, not status.

If I was ever to come into money, which I know I will eventually, I'll still live the simple life I have been living cept I will get new cars but not expensive. I'm totally happy with a Ford Fusion or equivilent. I will also pay off all bills and never ever get another cc or loan long as I live. I'll upgrade my dish network to their 100 channels or whatever it is and get back on a cell phone plan being I have been forced to cancel both in order to fill my car's belly up so I can work. I won't quit my job being I like working even if it is part-time. Buy the acre woods around us so I can have a horse again and maybe a steer to raise for meat and some chickens. I just want to be able to live comfortably so if I need something, I can go out and buy it without worrying what bills have to be paid late.

Gee when you think of it, for the price of that Rolex watch one could gas up there car for quite awhile. I'm kind of a paradox....I do have rather simplified tastes but I do want to have a fairly rich lifestyle...good home with a LOT of land..getting fed up with the city lifestyle, great cars (one practical like a Jeep Cherokee and one luxury...Jaguar) and wouldn't mind my own plane...then can load up my camera gear, hop on and fly wherever I want without any delays and go on photo shoots

Uhh, I'm sorry, but I'm going to spend what would cost me for a darn good house on a watch? TOO ostentatious! too showy! uhh uhh. I love me a watch, but honey, I could have bought a hundred perfectly good ones at Walmart for a fraction of the cost. so NO, I wouldn't. Now, a Dooney and Burke purse, a nice Coach purse, a nice Juicy Couture purse, at $100-300? oh yes, but not no watch, I have to probably hire a security guard to have my back while I wear it. So the answer to that is definitely, positively NO.

And to be honest, you'd be wearing your wealth on your wrist, and to me, that's not worth it. Nice to look at, but not my cup of tea. Look, in my opinion, a watch should be to tell time on, nothing less or more. You don't need no big time dime piece on your arm to look good, just have something you can work with and is durable. Timex is good. Bulova is good, them Swiss ones are the best, and none of them have to cost a grip. Put that money for a roof over your head and a car to drive in and a nice debit card to have enough gas so you won't be in a pickle and some back up money for when you need it.

Oh I agree... that kind of wasteful expenditure is for 'old money'... people who have been born into money and never had to work a day of their lives... or else become rich so long ago that they've kinda forgotten what it was like not to have it. Who knows though, maybe our attitude would change if we were actually in the position! For now though, I would say that I would never go out and buy a brand new car straight off the showroom floor... reason being, it devalues between 10-20% (and sometimes more) the minute you drive it off the lot. In the case of a $250,000 car that would be $25,000-$50,000 wasted practically the moment you start the engine. To me that is a complete and utter waste. If I had the money, I'd sooner purchase one that was a few months old and give that money to the needy where I know it would be going to good use. I mean, for goodness sakes, $50,000 would buy at least five decent, second hand, hyundai getz cars here in Australia (they sell for $16,990 brand new). Imagine the kind of difference giving one of those away would do for a needy family. As someone who knows what it's like to struggle financially I really don't think I would be able to waste money like that, just for the sake of wearing designer clothing or accessories, or driving a flash car. Like you, I am planning and working towards a comfortable and secure financial future where I can take holidays and not watch and worry over the credit card balance. I also plan to teach my children how to create wealth online so they can create their own... rather than just give them thousands of dollars worth of goods and money that they will take for granted. As the saying goes, "give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, give him a fishing rod and teach him to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime."

I have to admit, I wouldn't mind having some luxuries in life and have the luxury lifestyle. It's not really true that all people who gain a lot of wealth completely forget their roots especially if they grew up in hardships--I'm thinking of someone like Oprah Winfrey who is the wealthiest (or one of the wealthiest) women in the world...but she gives OUT a lot of money..sort of that concept what you give out comes back to you...she has helped out a lot of people in her lifetime. Then you have the opposite...now I'm thinking of someone like Paris Hilton..LOL...what a spoiled brat! She doesn't strike me in the least of someone who could care less what the "little" people are going through
• Australia
5 Jul 08
I must admit that I have great respect for Oprah Winfrey. Because she DOES remember what it was like to grow up without money and despite making a huge success of her life still thinks of the 'little person'... But I recently saw a program that revealed what celebrities spent their money on... and Oprah spent over $200,000 on an ornament for her house so spending exhorbitant amounts of money on luxury items really doesn't equate with forgetting one's roots. If you received the impression that I thought all rich people forgot what it was like to be poor then I apologize. Some do, but not all. Oprah has stayed humble despite her success. Others in similar positions become arrogant. If I wanted to emulate anyone I would have to say it would be Oprah. It would be nice to have those luxuries. But realistically speaking, most of us would just like to be able to live without worrying about the next bill that had to be paid and to go on holidays without going into debt by using the credit card to pay for it. I must admit that I look forward to the day when I can say to my boss, 'Thank you so much for letting me work for you all these years but... I QUIT!'

Ahh, I missed something... you mention Paris Hilton... well, she's 'old money' anyway so she probably was spoiled. My partner used to be the Concierge for the Hilton Hotel in Sydney (Australia) and actually met Paris when she was little (along with a host of other celebrities of course)... Apparently even as a child Paris was a little snot accustomed to giving orders and expecting everyone to jump and obey her every whim. Nicki on the other hand was apparently very down to earth. The one that I would think of in terms of forgetting their roots is Michael Jackson. Grew up in poverty until 'The Jackson Five' hit the bigtime... now look at him, arrogant, self absorbed, utterly eccentric and seems to think that the rules don't apply to him. If he does give anything to the poor it's probably more to make himself look good than out of any real generosity.

Ok, I admit. If I had endless amounts of money I would have some designer stuff. Not TONS of it, but some. I am wearing my husband's Armani t-shirt right now to sleep in. I only mention it because it pertains to the discussion and also it has to be THE softest t-shirt I have ever touched in my life! If I could afford it, I would fill my closet with these shirts...but I can't so there are only 2. My dad has a Rolex watch and plans to get another one day, next time a Submariner with a blue face. His didn't cost near what that diamond covered one you mentioned did though. If I won a huge amount of money, I would buy my daddy a drawer full of Rolex's.

Well, they can be really really expensive. But, I refuse to pay full price for them. I think I got these two for around $60 each. It has been awhile since I bought them though so that is just a guess.
1 Jul 08
If I had the money to spend and never worry about bills then for me, it'd be likely I'd spend on designer clothes. I alsmot wrote "splash out" on designer clothes there. But thinking about it, if you have the money it's a sensible investment If I buy jeans from Primark that are £6 they may last half a year If I receive designer jeans my mum had when she was 20 (and now she is nearing 50) they will still last me quite a few years. Quality clothing is definitely a worthwhile investment and if you don't just buy "fad" clothing - such as a bright yellow pair of jeans @ $700 because you know they're trendy- it can be worthwhile. Obviously if you know you won't be able to wear the clothing in a year or so time, it's not worth spending loads on. Another factor is that generally is if you feel confident in your clothing - this can effect day to day life

I'm just not into designer anything and they really don't last that much longer..they all made of the same fabrics as the cheapie clothes. I just did a discussion too that all designer labeled clothes are for the most part in sweatshops and not even in the country of origin but usually assembled in others countries like China, Mexico, Guatamala, Malaysia...what a rip off no??

uhhm.. so conclusion is a middle between quality and price is, in my opinion, a wiser choice

I would have to say Im definately a watch person and in fact that would be one of my very first purchases. The ironic thing is that I have not had a watch for more than 2 years after losing it in the snow when the bracelet came undone, it was a snap on kind--i was so disappointed in that because my boyfriend bought it for me and doesnt want to buy another fancy watch to my dismay and now that I have trouble finding a watch that i like that is not 'snap on' (it folds and then snaps) I just will not buy one. But I get what your saying about the Versace but my dream is to build a 100% energy efficient house that can actually give back to the grid and from watching Planet Green that could cost some money if Im going to have alot of acreage but Im still so excited. I really would like a biodiesel BMW that is not in the US yet but almost ready to be shipped over, Im going to have it painted beautifully with shimmering glittery paint but hey, I would have the money to do iT! Still, I cannot say that I would not want really expensive clothes if I knew they would last like luxury hemp clothing and organic cotton--Definately NICE SHEETS!!

Yeah but would you really want a watch that was that expensive when a much cheaper watch would do just as well? Think of all the other things you could buy for $250,000 besides just one watch.
